The governor-general has expressed shock at the suspected attack on Indi MP Helen Haines, citing growing “incivility” and discontent in Australia.
On Tuesday, it was confirmed that 65-year-old Helen Haines had a leg amputated after a horrific incident in which the Indi MP was pinned between two cars.
Haines was flown from Wangaratta, where the attack occurred outside her electorate office, to Melbourne for surgery on Monday night. She remains in a critical condition, having sustained severe lower body injuries.
Brendan Nugent, a 43-year-old man from the nearby town of Tarrawingee, is suspected of intentionally hitting the Independent MP with his Toyota Land Cruiser.
