Liverpool Transfer News: Andoni Iraola Pushes Alex Scott Move As Midfield Questions Grow
Liverpool’s midfield planning is already under fresh scrutiny, and Dom Smith for the Standard has added a significant detail to the conversation. The latest reporting suggests Andoni Iraola is actively driving interest in Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, with Liverpool once again in the frame for a player they have tracked closely.
That matters, not least because it points to the head coach taking a hands-on role in shaping the next phase of recruitment. Iraola’s early spell on Merseyside has produced enough encouragement to justify patience, but the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City exposed familiar structural issues in the centre of the pitch. Before the red card, the contest had a degree of balance. After it, Liverpool lost control, and the need for greater security and physical authority became harder to ignore.
Alex Scott back on Liverpool shortlist
According to the report, “Liverpool could revive their interest in Alex Scott in January as they look to strengthen their midfield. Some believe Andoni Iraola is pushing for a move for his former Bournemouth midfielder,” he wrote.
That detail is especially noteworthy. Coaches often influence recruitment, but when a manager is described as pushing for a specific deal, it usually reflects a strong belief in tactical suitability and character. Iraola knows Scott well from Bournemouth, understands how he works, and will have a clear picture of where he fits in Liverpool’s current setup.
The same report adds, “Bournemouth are open to offers above £100m and would seriously consider a substantial bid slightly below that figure. However, a January sale will only happen if Premier League survival looks likely.
“Many industry insiders view Chelsea as the frontrunners.”

Liverpool midfield rebuild still unresolved
Liverpool’s midfield has talent, yet the balance remains open to debate. Alexis Mac Allister brings intelligence and quality in possession, while Dominik Szoboszlai offers energy and attacking thrust. Even so, the blend has not always looked complete, especially in games that demand more defensive control and duel-winning presence.
That has been a recurring issue since Fabinho’s departure. Various solutions have been tried, and Ryan Gravenberch has had spells in deeper areas, but Liverpool still look like a side searching for the right long-term answer at the base of midfield. Recruitment teams will be aware of that, and it is understandable that a player such as Scott appeals.
He is young, Premier League-tested, tactically educated and already familiar with Iraola’s demands. Those are not minor factors when clubs weigh up major investments. The difficulty, of course, is cost. A fee in the region being discussed would place Scott among the most expensive midfield signings in the market, and that naturally changes the level of risk attached.
Chelsea threat adds pressure to transfer race
Any Liverpool move would also take place in a competitive landscape. Chelsea’s presence in the background is important, particularly if industry expectation already places them in a strong position. When that happens, interest can escalate quickly, whether through formal talks, renewed contact or strategic briefings from all sides.
For Liverpool, the question is whether admiration turns into action. Iraola’s support may count for plenty, but Bournemouth’s valuation and timing will shape the outcome. January deals of this size are difficult at the best of times. If survival calculations delay any sale, the discussion may roll into the summer.
Even so, this is one to monitor closely. Alex Scott fits the profile of a midfielder Liverpool could build around, and if Iraola is truly pushing, that tends to sharpen focus behind the scenes.
Our View
From a Liverpool perspective, this feels like a report that makes plenty of sense. Alex Scott is the type of player many fans can imagine thriving at Anfield, especially under a coach who already knows exactly how to use him. If Iraola wants him, that should carry real weight because one of the biggest mistakes clubs can make is signing good players who do not perfectly suit the manager’s system.
The obvious concern is the price. Anything around £100m is massive money, even in today’s market, and supporters will rightly ask whether that budget could address two midfield needs rather than one. Liverpool still need control, athleticism and reliability in the middle of the pitch, so the club has to be certain Scott is a transformational signing, not simply an exciting one.
There is also the Chelsea factor, which always makes these situations feel more complicated. If another elite club is heavily involved, Liverpool may need to move decisively rather than admire from a distance. Fans have seen too many drawn-out sagas in recent years.
Even so, there is real appeal here. Scott is young, technically sharp, proven in the league and familiar with Iraola’s demands. Supporters would hope that, if the manager is pushing this hard, the club respond with conviction and give him the midfield piece he clearly believes can raise Liverpool’s level.
