Data-backed secrets to smarter holiday shopping

Finding the perfect holiday gift shouldn't feel like a guessing game. To take the stress out of your shopping, we analyzed historical promotional patterns, Search trends, and discount data across U.S. merchants on Google. The result is our When to Buy Guide, a research-backed roadmap showing when holiday discounts may hit their peak, based on data from last year.

Here are a few tips and findings to help you shop smarter. For the full list of pricing trends and insights into our last-minute gifting habits, read the complete When to Buy Guide. You'll also discover which parent we shop for later, and which state claims the most last-minute shoppers.

• Snag your scent before the holiday rush: If you're eyeing a perfume or cologne for someone on your list, shop early. Fragrance discounts don’t typically increase as Christmas approaches, and the volume of fragrance deals drops off sharply, so waiting until late December may not offer lower prices — and could leave you with fewer options. Strategize by buying fragrances within the first two weeks after Black Friday weekend for the best deals and inventory selection.
• Reconsider the Black Friday handbag frenzy: If you’re on the lookout for the perfect handbag at the best price, consider holding off on buying during Black Friday weekend. Target mid-December to balance a high discount with a decent selection of styles, or wait until late December if you just want the lowest price on remaining inventory.
• Shop early for travel accessories, but later for suitcases: While travel accessories see their best deals in November, major items, such as large luggage and suitcases, don't typically hit their deepest markdowns until clearance sales in late December. With this in mind, consider buying travel accessories and packing cubes on Black Friday, but wait until late December for deep clearance discounts on large suitcases, though there may be less selection.
• Want a tech toy deal? Wait for it: Unlike traditional electronics, categories like motorized tech toys show some of their steepest markdowns emerging in the final weeks of December. If electronic toys are on your kids’ wish lists, consider holding out until the final shopping stretch to unlock surprise last-minute savings. If you wait to buy, keep an eye on holiday shipping deadlines, unless you plan on shopping in-store.

These trends should help you shop smarter this holiday season, but pricing and inventory can vary from year to year, so think of them as general guidance rather than absolute guarantees.
