⚽GIRLS SOCCER — Division II
Toll Gate 1, Pilgrim 0
Toll Gate started and ended this girls soccer regular season with a victory over its city rival.
Emma McIntyre made the difference on a breezy Wednesday evening at Bend Street, allowing the Titans to claim bragging rights for the second time against Pilgrim.
McIntyre's goal in the 39th minute was all Toll Gate needed to secure a 1-0 win over the Patriots. The Titans took all three points just as they did in a 4-2 triumph back on Sept. 4
Pilgrim dictated the majority of the play in the first half until Toll Gate stole a late lead into the break. McIntyre took possession in the offensive half, carried the ball diagonally to the left and fired a left-footed shot back against the grain that nestled inside the right post. That was the margin the Titans required to prevail.
Toll Gate keeper Brooke Richer made sharp saves early on Bella Pfeiler and Allison Patten before the post came to her rescue in the 50th minute. Pfeiler was alone in front and whipped a right-footed shot that crashed off the left side of the cage. The Titans were able to scramble away a clearance and Richer made eight stops to notch a shutout.
The Patriots (9-3-5) and Toll Gate (9-5-2) entered as the 4-5 quarterfinal meeting in the upcoming playoff bracket. Both sides are done until the postseason and will await word of an assignment early next week. Scituate, Ponaganset and North Smithfield owned the top three seeds in the field coming into Wednesday's action.
