THE Indian leadership’s continued resort to threatening rhetoric against Pakistan raises serious concerns about regional peace and stability. The latest provocative statement by Indian Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, reflects a dangerous tendency to issue threats rather than pursue restraint and responsible diplomacy.
Instead of learning from past confrontations, India’s leadership appears determined to keep the region on edge through aggressive statements that serve neither peace nor the interests of its people. Pakistan’s response has been unequivocal. Foreign Office spokesperson, Sajjad Haider Khan, at his weekly news briefing on Friday rightly warned that Pakistan’s restraint and commitment to peace should not be mistaken for weakness and that any aggression would be met with a forceful response. Indeed, Pakistan has demonstrated on multiple occasions its capabilities to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The foreign office spokesperson also reminded India of the consequences of its military aggression in May last year when Pakistan demonstrated both its capability and resolve and gave a befitting response and reply to the Indian aggression. The defeat India suffered last year at the hands of our armed forces appears difficult for its leadership to digest. Yet any renewed aggression would bring an even greater embarrassment for New Delhi. Our armed forces have repeatedly demonstrated professionalism, preparedness and operational capability. As regards Indian allegations of terrorism against Pakistan, these are baseless and carry no weight. The fact of matter is that India is not the victim but perpetrator of terrorism inside Pakistan through its proxies especially in Afghanistan. It is Pakistan that has suffered heavy human and economic losses as a result of Indian-backed terrorism. India’s crimes do not end here. Its involvement in transnational crimes is also a matter of serious concern. It is incumbent upon the international community to hold India accountable for its actions. Lasting peace in South Asia demands dialogue, mutual respect and responsible conduct, not threats and confrontation. Pakistan’s commitment to peace remains firm, but its resolve to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity is equally unwavering.
