The second president of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, may evade investigation, therefore it is necessary to keep him in pretrial detention, according to the Anti-Corruption Committee.
This is the fourth incarceration of Kocharyan since 2018. The previous three were along the lines of a criminal case, the basis of which was the Armenian Criminal Code’s Article 300.1, which, however, was declared unconstitutional and invalid by the Constitutional Court in 2021.
Meanwhile, after his release from previous detentions, Robert Kocharyan has always demonstrated proper procedural conduct. This also casts serious doubt on the necessity of his subsequent detention, especially on the grounds of the alleged risk of evading investigation.
As reported earlier, the Anti-Corruption Court of Armenia on Tuesday will consider the prosecution’s motions to extend the current pretrial detentions of Robert Kocharyan and his son, Sedrak, for another two months.
The consideration of the motion with respect to Sedrak Kocharyan is scheduled for 18:00, while regarding Robert Kocharyan is slated for 18:30.
