West Ham United have spent the past week showing two very different sides of their promotion campaign. Six goals at Lincoln City demonstrated their attacking potential, while a narrow victory at Swansea City demanded patience, defensive discipline and a willingness to fight for every point.
For captain Jarrod Bowen, the contrasting results offered encouragement as Nuno Espírito Santo’s side continue their pursuit of an immediate return to the Premier League.
The Hammers demolished nine-man Lincoln 6-0 on 14 October before travelling to Wales three days later. Swansea presented a tougher examination, particularly after their impressive start to the Championship campaign.
Divine Mukasa settled the contest with a 34th-minute goal at the Swansea.com Stadium. West Ham created opportunities to extend their advantage but couldn’t find another breakthrough. Instead, the visitors protected their lead to secure three valuable points against the league leaders.
Bowen admitted that West Ham hadn’t produced their best performance, yet he welcomed the result and the different qualities his teammates displayed.
“If you want to be dominant, if you want to do good things this season, you have to have all sorts of wins,” the captain said, speaking to West Ham’s official.
The England international acknowledged that performances won’t always reach the required standard. However, he stressed that the result remains paramount when teams compete for promotion across a demanding Championship season.
West Ham’s victory also rewarded travelling fans who followed the team to South Wales after making the midweek journey to Lincoln. The away support continued to give the players encouragement, and Bowen made a point of recognising their contribution.
The captain believes the connection between players and fans can help sustain the club’s momentum through difficult spells. He also urged everyone associated with West Ham to enjoy the achievement before turning their attention to the next challenge.
Two home fixtures now await the Hammers, with Southampton and West Bromwich Albion scheduled to visit over successive Saturdays. Both matches offer West Ham an opportunity to build on their recent results and strengthen their promotion challenge.
Bowen knows the squad must maintain its standards, particularly after demonstrating that it can secure points without producing a spectacular performance.
“We’ve got to keep it going,” he said.
Should Nuno Prioritise Promotion Results Over West Ham’s Playing Style?

Nuno Espírito Santo should retain his pragmatic approach, but West Ham cannot allow defensive caution to become their defining feature. The 1-0 victory at Swansea demonstrated the value of organisation and resilience, while the six-goal display at Lincoln highlighted the attacking threat available within this squad.
The Lincoln result needs context, however. The hosts received two red cards inside the opening 23 minutes, giving West Ham a substantial numerical advantage. The Swansea victory therefore offers a more meaningful test of their ability to manage a difficult away fixture.
Fans’ frustration becomes understandable when cautious football limits West Ham’s creativity against opponents they should dominate. Nuno must recognise that promotion requires consistent results, yet convincing performances can help restore confidence after relegation.
Bowen’s leadership will prove important in maintaining standards across both types of contest. His six Championship goals and five assists before the Swansea fixture underline his attacking contribution, while his public comments reinforce the need for collective commitment.
West Ham should judge Nuno primarily on results, tactical adaptability and progress towards promotion, rather than demanding attractive football in every match. However, he must improve the team’s attacking fluency when opponents defend deep and surrender possession.
The objective is straightforward, and that’s to preserve the defensive discipline that earned the Swansea victory without sacrificing the creativity that made the Lincoln performance so impressive. West Ham need both qualities if they want to sustain their challenge at the top of the Championship.
