No criminal record and other requirements to join SAPS training amid 5500 candidate search

• The South African Police Service is inviting qualified citizens aged 18 to 35 to apply for its police trainee basic training programme
• Applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate, pass physical and psychometric checks, and have no visible tattoos in uniform
• Successful candidates receive a monthly stipend of R5,000 during a training phase lasting six to nine months

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched its latest recruitment drive for police trainees, opening doors for young citizens to join the national police force. To qualify for enrolment, candidates must be South African citizens aged between 18 and 35 on the application closing date. Applicants must hold a Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification, and demonstrate proficiency in English alongside at least one other official South African language.

Integrity, vetting, and physical criteria

According to official guidelines set out in the SAPS Police Trainee Advert 2026–2027, recruits face strict character and background assessments. Applicants must have no criminal convictions, no pending cases, and must not have been declared unfit to possess a firearm. In addition, individuals previously dismissed from an employer for misconduct, dishonesty, violence, or drug-related offences are ineligible.

Physical and medical standards remain central to the selection process. Candidates must have no visible tattoos when wearing a standard SAPS uniform. Police spokesperson Col Amanda van Wyk noted that every applicant undergoes rigorous screening, including physical fitness, psychometric testing, integrity testing, and medical evaluations. As part of vetting, recruits must consent to fingerprinting, buccal DNA sampling, and background checks.

Specialised fields are also catered for under this recruitment drive. Van Wyk confirmed that qualified graduates holding qualifications in law, policing, criminology, forensic investigation, or IT may be considered for placement within specialised divisions, including the Hawks, detective services, forensic services, and crime intelligence.

Training duration, stipend, and portal caution

Training length depends on the recruit's educational background. Candidates with a Grade 12 certificate undergo a standard nine-month training course, while those holding a relevant NQF Level 6 or higher qualification complete a fast-tracked six-month programme. Trainees receive a monthly stipend of R5,000 during the basic training phase.

Qualified candidates can submit applications online via the official SAPS e-Recruitment Portal, which opens on 31 October 2026, and closes on 13 November 2026. SAPS emphasised that the application process is free, urging applicants to remain cautious of fraudsters attempting to sell trainee positions or demand payment for job placements.
