Discussions on the Israeli LORA ballistic missile produced by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) are advancing, with strong interest from the Greek side.
According to NemesisHD, the focus of recent contacts has shifted toward co-production of the system in Greece—a goal that sits at the center of planning by the Ministry of National Defense and the joint staffs. This development comes as the missile’s profile itself is evolving.
Following the German Navy’s successful operational test of the Naval LORA under the OPEX program in early September 2026, official reports now place its potential range at 500 kilometers and above, compared with the up to 430 km figure IAI had previously indicated for the existing version.
The difference suggests either a newer extended-range configuration or earlier conservative figures. For Greece, the updated range would give Army artillery an organic deep-strike category it currently lacks.
NemesisHD has followed the LORA topic closely for years. Reporting around the parliamentary approval of the PULS multiple-launch rocket systems already flagged LORA as a deeper interest. A subsequent technical analysis, based on discussions with IAI officials, highlighted lesser-known advantages.
In January 2026, during the visit of Israel’s Defense Minister to Athens, LORA was a central point of talks. Israel appeared open to broad cooperation, including co-production, provided Greece committed to a sufficient number of missiles, and proposed systems carried at least 25 percent domestic participation. By September, well-informed sources indicated LORA was likely the next choice to strengthen the Hellenic Army’s deep-strike capability, particularly for artillery.
The LORA is a solid-fuel ballistic missile designed for precision strikes at operational and strategic depth. As detailed in earlier Nemesis reporting and consistent with IAI data, it measures roughly 5.2 meters in length and 624 millimeters in diameter, with a launch weight of about 1,600 kilograms. Range spans 90 to more than 500 kilometers, accuracy is on the order of 10 meters CEP, and guidance combines INS/GNSS with a terminal TV seeker according to unofficial information. The warhead can reach approximately 600 kilograms depending on configuration, and the impact angle runs from 60 to 90 degrees.
In land configuration it carries four missiles in sealed canisters on a vehicle of around 16 tons. It is intended for high-value targets such as command centers, air bases, air-defense batteries, missile systems, infrastructure, and hardened sites. Its high speed and shaped ballistic trajectory sharply reduce reaction time for opposing air defenses.
A standout feature emphasized in IAI briefings covered by Nemesis is the hermetically sealed Transport-and-Launch Canister, or TPK. It creates a stable micro-environment of controlled temperature, pressure, and humidity that protects the solid propellant and electronics. This “wooden round” concept allows the missile to remain fully ready for years without preventive maintenance. Electric actuators, with no hydraulics, further simplify logistics. According to the manufacturer, a battalion-level package carries 48 ready missiles and can deliver a mass salvo in under two minutes, with reload in about 60 minutes, full 360-degree coverage, ten minutes into action, and three minutes to displace. Such a salvo could saturate even modern AESA-equipped air defenses that possess anti-ballistic capability.
Naval launch has been demonstrated since at least 2017 and was confirmed operationally by the German Navy in 2026. Because the missile stays inert yet permanently ready inside the canister, minimal preparation is required and the system can be activated from a command console in minutes. Integration on low-signature platforms, including auxiliary or commercial-type vessels, would allow power projection beyond coastal A2/AD zones while creating uncertainty for an adversary about which platforms actually carry operational missiles.
Co-production remains the central issue, as Nemesis has reported. The national goal at Ministry and staff level is for Greece to move beyond being a simple buyer of defense systems and become a co-producer of defense technologies. For a system like LORA this could mean domestic manufacture of subsystems, technology transfer, and meaningful participation by the Greek defense industry in a strategically important capability.
The existing framework already includes at least 25 percent local content, with scope for further co-production and know-how transfer; according to the latest information, negotiations are now concentrating on this point. Completion of talks and a final price are still required before any purchase proceeds.
For Greek deterrence doctrine, which has long rested on air superiority, naval flexibility, and dispersed power across the island complex, LORA would add a fourth independent axis: immediate, deep, high-precision strikes from land or sea platforms without lengthy force deployment or exposure of aircraft. In an environment of rapidly improving air-defense umbrellas, a weapon that strikes targets while keeping aircraft out of harm’s way has clear value.
The ability to place canisters on commercial-type ships, already proven in tests, adds strategic ambiguity. LORA is classified as a precision tactical ballistic missile rather than a long-range strategic system. It offers theater-level strike options—up to 430 km in the current version and over 500 km in the newer one—against time-sensitive and hardened targets. Its sealed canisters, electric actuation, and multi-platform flexibility make it particularly suited to Greek operational needs in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
