China’s Unitree Robotics has unveiled the H2-X, a humanoid robot designed to help in emergencies, including confronting attackers and rescuing people from danger. A promotional video released on Wednesday shows the robot disarming a knife-wielding intruder, smashing a car door, lifting a vehicle to free a trapped victim, and pulling a pedestrian away from an oncoming car.
The demonstration highlighted the company’s efforts to explore practical applications for its robots beyond entertainment and viral stunts.
However, Unitree has provided limited details about the H2-X’s technical specifications, availability, and potential commercial deployment.
Robot tackles emergencies
Unitree has unveiled the H2-X humanoid robot in a demonstration showing it disarming a knife-wielding attacker, lifting a car, and pulling a pedestrian away from an oncoming vehicle.
The Hangzhou-based company released the promotional video on October 21, presenting the machine as a “guardian” robot capable of intervening in dangerous situations. The demonstration shows the H2-X confronting an intruder threatening a woman, smashing through a car door, and moving a person away from the path of an approaching vehicle.
However, Unitree has not disclosed detailed technical specifications for the new model or clarified whether the actions demonstrated were performed autonomously or choreographed in advance.
The H2-X, presented as “Kung Fu Legend: Guardian,” builds on the company’s existing H2 humanoid platform. Unitree has increasingly used demonstrations of physical capabilities to showcase its robots, including martial arts movements, dancing, acrobatics, and combat-style maneuvers.
Unitree’s existing H2 humanoid stands approximately 1.8 meters tall and weighs around 154 pounds (70 kilograms). According to the company’s product description, the earlier model has 31 degrees of freedom and a maximum leg-joint torque of 360 newton-meters.
Degrees of freedom indicate the number of independent movements a robotic system can perform. In a humanoid robot, these movements allow different joints to coordinate actions such as walking, turning, balancing, and manipulating objects.
Joint torque is also important for physical tasks, as it determines the rotational force a motor can apply. However, maximum joint torque alone does not establish how much weight a robot can lift, carry, or move under different operating conditions.
Unitree has not confirmed whether the H2-X retains the H2’s specifications or uses modified actuators, joints, sensors, or control systems. The company said the newer model could stand for about eight hours, but it did not provide further details on battery capacity, power consumption, or endurance during physically demanding tasks.
The company also did not announce a release date or price, leaving questions unanswered about the robot’s availability and intended customers.
Robot threat detection
A central technical question is whether the H2-X can recognize threats and respond independently. Although the promotional video depicts the robot intervening in several dangerous situations, Unitree has not explained how it detects people, identifies potential threats, plans movements, or determines when to act.
The company has also not clarified whether the robot relies on remote control, pre-programmed sequences, autonomous decision-making, or a combination of these approaches.
These distinctions are important for a machine intended to operate around people. Responding to an unexpected attack or moving a person away from a vehicle requires more than physical strength. A robot would need to interpret changing surroundings, coordinate its movements, and avoid causing additional harm.
Last month, Unitree announced its UnifoLM-X2-1.0 artificial intelligence model, which it said enabled humanoid robots to spar autonomously by punching, blocking, and dodging. The H2-X demonstration follows this push to combine physical robotics with AI-driven movement and control.
Unitree ended the promotional video with a warning against dangerous modifications and unauthorized uses. It advised maintaining a safety distance of at least two to three meters from the robot.
The company has not provided evidence establishing the H2-X’s performance in unscripted emergencies. Its practical capabilities, safety safeguards, and readiness for real-world deployment therefore remain unclear.
