3 Guardians most to blame for 3-1 Game 2 loss to Rays appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Cleveland Guardians had a chance to take control of the American League Championship Series on Tuesday. Instead, a defensive breakdown and an offense that could not deliver enough timely hits sent them to a 3-1 Game 2 loss against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.
The Guardians’ Game 2 loss leaves the series at 1-1, and they should regret an opportunity they wasted. Freddy Peralta deserves credit for six shutout innings, but the Guardians contributed to their defeat.
Parker Messick allowed three unearned runs over five innings. He surrendered the damaging hit after an error, but blaming him ahead of the players below would overlook how this game unraveled.

Jose Ramirez
Jose Ramirez carries the most responsibility because his fourth-inning mistakes gave the Rays an opening they never relinquished.
First, his lapse allowed Victor Mesa Jr. to advance to third on Chandler Simpson’s infield single. Then Ben Williamson hit a grounder that should have ended the inning. Instead, the ball went through Ramirez’s legs, allowing Mesa to score and keeping the inning alive.
Rays catcher Liam Hicks followed with a two-run single. One missed play had become a three-run deficit.
Messick still needed to finish the inning, but he had produced the ground ball that should have accomplished that. The Guardians cannot ask their pitching staff to repeatedly compensate for extra outs against a postseason opponent.
Ramirez’s importance to the team does not exempt him from criticism. It makes that breakdown more consequential. The Guardians needed their cornerstone to stabilize a tight game, and his defense instead changed its direction.
Jo Adell
Jo Adell’s 0-for-4 night hurt when the Guardians threatened to erase the deficit.
His seventh-inning strikeout stranded runners at second and third. Chase DeLauter’s RBI double had cut the lead to 3-1, setting up a chance for one hit to tie the game.
That failure makes him a stronger blame candidate than a hitter without a comparable opportunity. The cleanup hitter had the tying runs available and ended the inning without advancing either.
Peralta had exited, so Cleveland could no longer explain its stalled comeback solely through the starter’s dominance. Adell needed to extend the rally against Tampa Bay reliever Ian Seymour. Instead, their clearest chance to turn the game disappeared.
Nathaniel Lowe
Nathaniel Lowe finished 0-for-4, leaving Cleveland’s fourth and fifth hitters a combined 0-for-8.
He led off four innings without reaching base and struck out twice. His responsibility differs from Adell’s. Lowe failed to create opportunities rather than squander the same pivotal scoring chance.
A middle-order hitter must contribute more than outs when the offense needs a foothold. His empty night repeatedly forced the hitters behind him to begin building a rally with less room for error.
The Guardians still have a competitive series and home games ahead of them. But returning home cannot repair these mistakes by itself. Ramirez must finish routine plays, Adell must capitalize on scoring chances, and Lowe must help generate them. The Guardians’ Game 2 loss exposed failures Cleveland cannot afford to repeat.
