The Gombe State House of Assembly has passed the bill for the creation of state police.
The 26-clause bill was sent to the House by the National Assembly on October 6, 2026, for concurrence under Section 9(2) of the 1999 Constitution.
The bill seeks a legal framework for a State Police Service, separate from the federal-controlled Nigeria Police Force.
Hon. Sadam Bello presented the report of the committee that reviewed it, saying it had the support of a two-thirds majority of members under Order 17, Rule 3 of the House Standing Orders, 2020. The House then considered the report in the Committee of the Whole and unanimously passed the bill.
Under the Constitution, an amendment needs the approval of at least 24 of the 36 state assemblies. Gombe is among the states that have now endorsed the changes.

Gombe State’ position has shifted. At an earlier North-East zonal public hearing on constitution review, the state government opposed state police, citing inadequate funds and fear of abuse.
TVC News had earlier reported that the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill says the proposed constitutional amendment to establish a dual policing system has secured the approval of 24 State Houses of Assembly, meeting the required constitutional threshold.
The group disclosed this in a statement by the Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Friday, October 23.
This brings the total number of state that has approved the state police bill to 25.
