The Kansas City Chiefs are 4-0 and humming along, but their passing game has a glaring hole that won’t fix itself. Patrick Mahomes needs a receiver who can stretch the field and win contested catches, and Rashee Rice is out with a hamstring injury for Sunday’s game against the Chargers. According to Yahoo Sports, general manager Brett Veach must target George Pickens before the November 10 trade deadline to give this team its best shot at a fifth ring. The team cannot rely on Xavier Worthy alone to do the heavy lifting downfield.
Pickens is the only name on the list who fits the bill for a true difference-maker. Following the failure to secure a long-term extension with the franchise tag in Dallas, his future past the 2026 season remains uncertain as he plays under that designation now. Should the Cowboys drop from contention, trading him may become their sole method to regain draft assets instead of watching him depart in free agency, presenting a difficult decision. While Jerry Jones would probably insist on a significant return, Kansas City might deem the expense justified if they view Pickens as Mahomes’ primary target for the upcoming four or five years.
Why A Rental Like Mooney Is Not Enough
Some analysts suggest Darnell Mooney makes sense because he is cheap and fits the intermediate zone, but that is a short-term fix for a long-term problem. According to Arrowhead Addict, Mooney is averaging just 3.4 targets and 1.6 catches per game while playing third fiddle to Malik Nabers. He is a rental for a 2027 or 2028 seventh-round pick, which is not sexy and does not solve the lack of a dynamic playmaker. The Chiefs require a player who can alter a game instantly with a single touch, much like Tyreek Hill did during his tenure with the franchise.
Jerry Jeudy is another option mentioned by Yahoo Sports, but he would be a different kind of addition who does not necessarily require a massive trade package. Although his route-running skills suit Andy Reid’s offense, he currently occupies a diminished role with the Cleveland Browns. While he could maximize his strengths in space, he lacks the superstar potential that Pickens brings to the table. Improvement does not strictly require a superstar for Kansas City, yet these three prospects possess such potential and deserve Veach’s attention as the deadline nears.
The Cost Of Winning Now
The front office has spent years building a roster that can contend, and adding another wide receiver should be the priority right now. Off-field troubles and injuries plague Rashee Rice during his contract year, casting doubt on his long-term status within Kansas City. Despite possessing speed, Xavier Worthy has not yet solidified his status among the NFL’s top wide receivers, resulting in a lack of a dependable WR3 for the squad. To execute a major move, George Pickens must lead the Chiefs’ list, providing Kansas City with a true difference-maker.
Head coach Andy Reid stated that Rashee Rice and offensive tackle Josh Simmons will both sit out Sunday’s matchup versus the Los Angeles Chargers. A right hamstring injury from Kansas City’s Week 4 win over the Las Vegas Raiders hinders Rice, whereas Simmons deals with a back injury. With these key players out, the need for a high-end receiver becomes even more urgent as the team prepares for the playoff push. The clock is ticking toward November 10, and Veach must act now to secure the talent needed for another run.
