Could DK Metcalf end up with the Indianapolis Colts? Recently, Aaron Zacharias of Horseshoe Heroes wrote about wide receivers the Colts need to consider before the NFL Trade Deadline passes. Metcalf, who’s currently with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was on the list:
“DK Metcalf (Pittsburgh Steelers)
DK Metcalf is the least likely on this list for the Colts’ future ambitions, but he’s also the most interesting possible target. Either it’s the Aaron Rodgers factor, or he’s simply not a good fit with the Pittsburgh Steelers; Metcalf has, in any case, not worked out. There is a world where the Steelers could trade Metcalf after just one and a half seasons, or wait until they get a different quarterback next year. That said, if there is any interest in him from other teams, would the Steelers turn it away? The Colts could land a No. 1 target with actual No. 1 target experience.”
Without a doubt, Indianapolis needs help at the wide receiver position. Does trading for DK Metcalf make sense?
Analyst Lists DK Metcalf as a Trade Target for the Colts
The Seattle Seahawks drafted DK Metcalf in the second round (64th overall pick) of the 2019 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he caught 58 passes for 900 yards and seven touchdowns. He recorded seven receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown in Seattle’s playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles. It was the NFL record for most receiving yards by a rookie in a postseason game.
In 2020, Metcalf finished with 83 receptions for 1,303 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He also made the Pro Bowl and was named a second-team All-Pro.
Metcalf finished the 2023 campaign with 66 receptions for 1,114 yards and eight touchdowns. He was named to the second Pro Bowl of his career that year.
DK Metcalf was later traded to the Steelers in 2025. During his career in Pittsburgh, he has caught 78 passes for 1,075 yards and seven touchdowns.
Metcalf’s production has been underwhelming this year. In five games, he has only recorded 19 catches for 225 yards and a touchdown on 37 targets.
The Last Word

The Colts wide receiver room is not elite by any stretch of the imagination. It wouldn’t be great even if Alec Pierce was available.
Pierce is currently out with a heel injury, and is reportedly still a few weeks away from returning to the field. The former Cincinnati Bearcat signed a four-year, $114 million extension with the Colts during the offseason. Pierce was supposed to be “The Man” for Indy, but he has only played in two games this season.
Fellow Colts receivers like Josh Downs and newcomer Keenan Allen haven’t stepped up in Pierce’s absence. The team was rumored to trade for Marvin Harrison Jr., but the Arizona Cardinals, of course, traded him to the Houston Texans instead.
Should Indy trade for DK Metcalf before this year’s November 10 Trade Deadline? The Colts could use a two-time Pro Bowler like Metcalf. Yet, it’s unclear what the team would have to give up in a deal. Plus, it’s unclear whether the Steelers would even be willing to trade him.
Colts quarterback Daniel Jones would surely love to add DK Metcalf. What quarterback wouldn’t want to add another offensive playmaker? Metcalf could team with tight end Tyler Warren and improve the team’s pass-catching corps. But it’s unlikely that such a trade will happen.
