Police have arrested four leaders of the banned Chhatra League and Swechasebak League from Dhaka Udyan in the capital's Mohammadpur area over plans to organise Awami League processions and carry out criminal activities in Dhaka.
A team from Mohammadpur Police Station raided Block C of Dhaka Udyan on a tip-off and arrested the four yesterday (21 October), the station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Halim said.
According to the OC, police have information that the arrestees were in contact by mobile phone with leaders of the Awami League, whose political activities are currently banned, and were staying in the area to organise criminal activities and Awami League processions in Dhaka.
The arrestees are Jalal Uddin, 32, a former Chhatra League member from Ward 1 of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh; Naim Hasan Dalim, 32, former president of Chhatra League's Ward 7 unit in Habirbari Union; Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, 34, a former organising secretary of the same union unit; and Al-Amin, 35, a former Swechasebak League member.
Police said Dalim faces multiple cases under the Narcotics Control Act, the Special Powers Act and various sections of the Penal Code. The cases were filed at different police stations in Sunamganj and Mymensingh.
Mamun also faces two cases at Bhaluka Model Police Station in Mymensingh over allegations including murder, explosives-related offences and vandalism, police said.
Legal proceedings against the four are under way, the OC said.
