Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has inaugurated a family festival and pledged to restore the city’s historical heritage. He said the initiative aims to attract younger generations to historic sites and make them lively public spaces again.
Speaking at Saturday’s opening ceremony, Wahab highlighted the festivals planned to bring people back to these locations. He said a Bohra Food Festival had previously taken place, while a women chefs’ festival is currently underway. Authorities also plan to organise a World Biryani Festival, followed by a Pulao Festival.

The mayor recalled a time when gunfire echoed through the area, contrasting it with the celebrations taking place today. He said a private bank had supported the restoration of Empress Market. Wahab added that the authorities would continue efforts to make the historic site more active and welcoming.
Wahab also defended road construction projects, saying improved infrastructure would benefit ordinary citizens. He acknowledged that critics would continue to raise objections but stressed that development work should move forward. He also warned anti-encroachment staff and urged the Karachi Development Authority, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and police to coordinate their efforts.

The mayor said authorities would take action against any officer found involved in wrongdoing. He also addressed parking fees, stating that the government had decided to eliminate them. Wahab directed town administrations to enforce the decision and asked citizens to report any roads where the KMC continues collecting parking charges.
