Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta is frustrated with his contract situation, and he made it clear that he believes his contributions to the team deserve more recognition.
LaPorta expressed disappointment that the Lions have yet to offer him a contract extension. The tight end is approaching free agency at the end of the season and could be playing elsewhere next year if Detroit does not get a deal done.
“It’s disappointing that you go out there every week and bear the risk of getting hurt,” LaPorta told Pardon My Take (Via Jordan Schultz). “Like last year, I broke my f—ing back for the team. And then I’m going out there this year, and I’m balling, and maybe they’re just not showing the love.”

#Lions TE Sam LaPorta on not getting a contract extension:

LaPorta’s comments show the frustration of a player who believes he has done everything asked of him while waiting for the team to reward his performance. His reference to “breaking his back” underscores the physical toll of playing in the NFL and the risk players accept every time they step onto the field.
Despite his disappointment, LaPorta made it clear that he intends to keep producing for Detroit. However, he also acknowledged that his future might not include the Lions if the two sides cannot agree on an extension.
“I’m going to continue to do my thing and ball out, and in three months, if I don’t get to wear the Honolulu blue and play for the Lions anymore, it’s going to be all good,” LaPorta said. “I’ll go get paid somewhere else. So whatever.”
That is a blunt message from a player who would seemingly prefer to remain in Detroit but is not prepared to wait indefinitely for a new deal.
If Sam LaPorta reaches the open market, his receiving ability and experience with the Lions could make him an attractive option for teams looking to upgrade at tight end. His contract situation will be worth monitoring as the offseason approaches, particularly if Detroit allows negotiations to continue without an agreement.
