By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced an US$8 billion aid package to help American farmers cover rising diesel costs during the harvest season.
The initiative, called the Harvest Fuel Relief Program, was announced Monday during a campaign rally in Kansas and in a post on his Truth Social account, as the administration seeks to ease economic pressures ahead of next month’s midterm elections.
According to Yahoo finance, the program will be administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is expected to provide one-time payments through the Farm Service Agency to help farmers offset fuel expenses.
Trump credited Republican Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas with helping advance the initiative, while promising additional support for farmers if Republicans win the upcoming elections. He also said fuel prices could fall once the conflict involving Iran ends.
The announcement comes as rising energy costs continue to affect agriculture and transportation across the United States.
Diesel prices reportedly averaged approximately US$6.31 per gallon on Monday, following record highs in September, driven by conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as limited global refining capacity.
