Jalen Hurts‘ superficial blood clot has turned from a precaution into a season-altering problem for the Philadelphia Eagles. The quarterback asked for calf treatment on October 8, telling the medical staff he was cleated in the Oct. 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams.
An Oct. 10 ultrasound in London found a superficial blood clot, but team doctors and medical staff concluded he could safely play. Hurts took every snap in the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, playing without limitation.
A follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday night, Oct. 14, revealed movement in the small blood clot. The Eagles initially ruled Hurts out for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. While sources initially indicated the team did not plan to use injured reserve, further medical evaluations led the team to alter their plans.
Adam Schefter wrote, “After consultations with numerous doctors and experts that went into Saturday, the Eagles are placing quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve, sources tell @rapsheet and me. The move will sideline Hurts indefinitely.”

Hurts has gone through continuous treatment and two ultrasounds since October 8. Outside medical experts note that if a clot extends or requires blood thinners, a player cannot compete due to the high risk of internal bleeding. The Eagles stated that Hurts’ “health and safety are our highest priority.”
Fans’ strong reaction after Eagles place Jalen Hurts on injured reserve
However, more than a week passed since the issue first came to light before the team ultimately placed him on Injured Reserve (IR) ahead of their Week 6 game. This perceived management delay ignited significant criticism and anger from fans across social media.
One fan wrote, “It is Unforgivable how that organization put him at risk… I hope they did not put his future health at risk to play a game.”
Another added, ”It’s absolutely irresponsible to let him get on a plane with a known clot of any kind.”
A third fan noted, “I’m not even an Eagles fan but the Jalen Hurts situation still stresses me out. Like yeah no shit he’s on IR, you could have killed that man.”
The fourth asked, “I know Jalen Hurts ain’t never scared to play no matter what. I got ??? for the Eagles for putting his life in danger. Why is he flying 7hours with a blood clot?”
A fifth user claimed, “Whoever cleared hurts to play knowing he had the blood clot should be fired.”
Jalen Hurts leaves a massive void under center after signing a five-year, $255 million contract extension in 2023. Tanner McKee takes over as the starting quarterback against the Carolina Panthers, while Philadelphia signed quarterback Joe Milton III off the Dallas Cowboys practice squad for roster depth. The Eagles have not set a return timeline, leaving it up to Hurts’ medical team to decide when he can safely play again.
