Cockroach Janta Party(CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke has urged supporters to spend time with their families during the festive period, signalling a possible pause in protests as the movement’s spokespersons,Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, remain in judicial custody.
In an X post, Dipke appealed to supporters to pray for the two jailed leaders and ensure that anger and hatred do not undermine the movement’s principles of peace, compassion and kindness.
“Spend time with your families for a few days,” Dipke told supporters, whom he referred to as “cockroaches”. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by volunteers who had allegedly been beaten up or detained during protests, but said the situation was equally challenging for the families of those in custody.
Dipke said he had spoken to the families of Ranka and Das, who had urged supporters not to worry about them. He described the two spokespersons as the real leaders of the movement, crediting them with playing a decisive role in its development.
The CJP founder became emotional while speaking about the duo, saying he had largely followed their instructions and respected their decision-making abilities. He also praised their composure in court and said they had continued to uphold the movement’s commitment to peaceful resistance despite being jailed.
Dipke further criticised comparisons between the CJP protests and demonstrations in Nepal, Bangladesh and France, arguing that the movement had remained non-violent and adhered to the principles of Mahatma Gandhi.
The protests were organised to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of unilateral functioning and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
A major protest planned for October 10 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi was met with heavy security deployment and barricades. Thousands of people, including Dipke, Ranka and Das, were detained.
Ranka and Das were detained on October 13 for allegedly violating the terms of a peace bond and sent to judicial custody on October 14. Their custody was extended by two days on Monday.
Dipke’s message emphasised that the movement’s strength lay in compassion and peaceful resistance, urging supporters to remain united while their colleagues continue to face legal proceedings.
