JOHANNESBURG · Culture
Fak’ugesi runs in Braamfontein until 17 October, Mamma Mia! opens at Montecasino on 16 October, and Saturday 24 October brings Zonke in concert and a cider festival. The rest of October, day by day.
JOHANNESBURG — This is the monthly culture guide for people who live in the city or are staying for a few weeks, not for a one-weekend tourist. It lists the things to do in Johannesburg in October 2026 that are worth crossing town for, with dates, venues, prices and ticket routes.
The second half of the month is the busiest. A digital-culture festival finishes in Braamfontein, a long-running ABBA musical opens in Fourways, and the Market Theatre holds its first queer festival.
Saturday 24 October adds a cider festival, a Zonke concert and a Langa Mavuso show.
Prices are in South African rand (R) with US$ values in brackets, converted at about R16.48 to the dollar (RT, 13 October 2026). Where a venue has not published a price or time, we say so rather than guess.

Its theme this year is “African Imaginaries”, with exhibitions, talks, performances, screenings and workshops on how African creators use AI, archives and immersive technology. It suits anyone in tech, media or design who wants to meet the local scene; the festival site mentions early-bird pricing, so check Webtickets for the current rate.

Big Top Arena, Carnival City, Brakpan · From R400 (about US$24) · SOLD OUT
The Afro-soul singer marks a decade of his career with a concert east of Johannesburg. Sun International lists the Carnival City show as sold out, so only returns or an official resale would get you in. Brakpan is on the East Rand, so allow extra travel time from the northern suburbs.
Saturday 24 October: Cider, Zonke and Langa Mavuso
Saturday 24 October, 11:00 to 23:00
Joburg Cider Festival
Toadbury Hall Hotel, Lanseria · From R340 (about US$21); VIP from R1,000 (about US$61)
A cider-tasting festival at a country hotel north-west of the city, with brand tasting zones, food pairings and live entertainment. Lanseria has little public transport, so arrange a designated driver.

Zonke: The Evergreen in Concert
Sandton Convention Centre, Sandown · R1,000–R3,500 (about US$61–US$212)
Zonke Dikana performs her catalogue with a live orchestra in a 25-song show that is her flagship production. It is the month’s most formal night out and the most expensive ticket on this list. Tickets are listed through Southern Sun, the venue’s operator.
Saturday 24 October
A Night with Langa Mavuso
Emperors Palace, Kempton Park · Price and platform not confirmed
Time Out Johannesburg lists this as a Langa Mavuso show at Emperors Palace. The venue is close to OR Tambo International Airport, so it works for travellers staying in the east. We could not confirm the start time or price, so check with Emperors Palace.
What It Means for You
For US readers, the practical point is timing. Johannesburg is six hours ahead of New York until 1 November (seven afterwards), and the busiest event days, 16 and 24 October, will fill up first.
Sjava’s Carnival City show already has.
If you are an American expat or remote worker, October is a good month to use the city’s cultural side. Fak’ugesi is a networking chance this week, and the Market Theatre and Montecasino offer reliable evening options from about US$17 to US$35 a ticket for Mamma Mia!.
What Is Not Known
Several listings do not state prices or start times, including Between Ghosts & Shadows, The Breasts of Tiresias, A Night with Langa Mavuso and the Karen Zoid shows. Confirm these with the venue before you travel, and check ticket status for Saturday 24 October, which is the most crowded day.
Planning Your Johannesburg in October
October is spring: warm days, cooler evenings and a real chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Outdoor events such as the Cider Festival call for rain protection and a warm layer after dark.
South Africa has no national public holiday in October. The next is the Day of Reconciliation on Wednesday 16 December, so offices, banks and shops keep normal hours all month.
Getting around at night is easiest by car or ride-hailing app. Several venues this month are outside the central city, including Brakpan, Kempton Park and Lanseria, and public transport is limited after dark.
Webtickets handles Fak’ugesi, Southern Sun lists Zonke, and Sun International lists Sjava. Foreign cards generally work on South African ticketing sites, but keep a second payment option ready.
