Winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics brought Michael Phelps worldwide recognition, but the swimmer also wanted to use his success to make a difference beyond the pool.
He put his $1 million sponsor bonus towards establishing the Michael Phelps Foundation, an initiative focused on encouraging swimming, water safety and healthy living among young people. According to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, one of the foundation’s early efforts was a nationwide tour promoting his “Dream, Plan, Reach” message. Over the following years, its programmes expanded to include mental health education, reaching children through partnerships with youth organisations.
From Olympic success to a wider purpose
Phelps had already made history in Beijing in 2008, winning eight gold medals at a single Olympic Games. But rather than keeping the entire sponsor bonus for himself, he used the $1 million to establish a foundation that could help more children discover swimming and learn skills that extend beyond sport. The Michael Phelps Foundation was established that year with a focus on water safety, youth swimming, wellness and goal-setting.
Its early “Dream, Plan, Reach” initiative encouraged children to set ambitions and work towards them through consistent effort. The message reflected a familiar part of Phelps’ own sporting journey: success requires a clear goal, planning and the determination to keep going. The foundation began working with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a network that provides programmes and support for young people in communities across the United States.
Its early nationwide tour took Phelps’ message to club members, connecting his experience as an Olympic athlete with children who might not otherwise have access to structured swimming or development programmes.
A swimming programme with lessons beyond the pool
One of the foundation’s main initiatives is the “im” programme, developed with KidsHealth.org and the Michael Phelps Swim School. The name refers both to the individual medley, Phelps’ signature swimming event, and the words “I am”, reinforcing the idea of self-belief and personal growth.
The programme combines swimming instruction and water-safety education with healthy living and goal-setting. Rather than concentrating only on athletic performance, it aims to help children become more comfortable in the water while developing confidence and habits that can support them in everyday life.According to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the programme launched in 2010 at six clubs and expanded to 28 clubs by 2012.
The foundation supports participating clubs through financial assistance, training, staff support, equipment, pool access and learning materials. These resources help organisations deliver lessons to children who may face barriers to swimming opportunities.Water safety is an important part of the initiative. Learning to swim can give children practical skills around pools and other bodies of water, while structured lessons can help them become more confident.
The programme also uses goal-setting to encourage participants to recognise progress, work towards achievable targets and develop a sense of accomplishment.
Expanding the mission to mental health
The foundation’s work later grew to include children’s emotional wellbeing. Its partnership with Nemours Children’s Health helped bring mental health education into its programmes, recognising that young people need support with emotional challenges as well as physical health and safety.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, this aspect of the work became especially relevant. School closures, separation from friends and changes to familiar routines created difficulties for many children.
In October 2021, Nemours Children’s Health and the Michael Phelps Foundation announced that their “IM Healthy” social-emotional learning programme had reached more than 50,000 children through 174 Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The programme drew on research and practices from areas including child development, psychology and paediatrics. Its lessons were designed to help children understand emotions, develop coping skills and recognise that it is normal not to feel okay all the time. The initiative extended the foundation’s original focus on healthy living by addressing the connection between emotional and physical wellbeing. The partnership also reflected Phelps’ growing willingness to speak publicly about mental health.
By supporting conversations about emotions and resilience, the foundation sought to make such topics easier for children to discuss in supportive settings.
Reaching children through partnerships
The foundation’s reach has depended on working with organisations that already serve young people. Through Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Special Olympics International and other partners, its programmes have reached children and young people in different communities.A 2020 announcement reported that the foundation had provided learn-to-swim, healthy living and goal-setting programmes to more than 100,000 children and young adults around the world. The 2021 announcement from Nemours recorded a separate milestone for the “IM Healthy” curriculum, which reached more than 50,000 children through 174 Boys & Girls Clubs of America. These figures reflect different programme measures rather than a single cumulative total.
Together, they illustrate how the foundation’s work expanded from swimming and goal-setting into emotional wellbeing education.
A legacy beyond medals
Phelps’ Olympic achievements remain central to his public identity, but the foundation represents another part of his legacy. The $1 million bonus that followed his record-setting performance in Beijing helped establish a programme focused on skills children can use long after a swimming lesson ends.By combining water safety, healthy living, goal-setting and mental health education, the Michael Phelps Foundation has broadened its mission beyond sport. Its work shows how an athlete’s success can support initiatives that help young people develop confidence, resilience and safer, healthier habits.
