SHILLONG, Oct 24: The Khet Bachao Abhiyan Rabi Campaign has commenced across Meghalaya to sensitise farmers on soil health management, improved agricultural practices and the use of modern farm tools.
The campaign, which will culminate on November 30, aims to make farming in the state’s hilly terrain more productive and less physically demanding.
As part of the initiative, a team of scientists from ICAR visited Umsarang village in Ri-Bhoi district, where 20 farmers were briefed on the importance of nutrient management.
The team highlighted the necessity of soil testing to identify fertility requirements and the role of liming in correcting soil acidity.
Discussions also focused on farm mechanisation for sloping lands to reduce manual labour and occupational health risks.
To encourage adoption, the scientists distributed small farm tools along with French bean and coriander seeds to the participants.
The campaign also reached Puriang village in East Khasi Hills, where 30 farmers, including 27 women, participated in the awareness session.
By providing practical guidance on soil management and day-to-day operations, the campaign seeks to help farmers make informed decisions based on their specific field conditions.
The initiative also aims to offer direct interaction and support to farming communities across the state, so as to promote sustainable agriculture.
