Sony has announced a Midnight Black PlayStation 5 (PS5) Digital Edition for Japan, launching on November 19, 2026. It costs JPY 55,000, and pre-orders open on October 20. Gamers get a black finish, a matching DualSense controller, and the same core gaming features as the regular PS5. The Japan-only model is limited to the country as it requires a PlayStation account registered in Japan.
Release Date and Price
The console reaches Japanese stores on November 19, 2026, and Sony will take pre-orders from October 20 through participating retailers and online stores in Japan. At JPY 55,000, it works out to about Rs. 33,200 at an approximate exchange rate. That isn’t an official price for India, and local taxes or import fees could push the final cost higher.
Sony has also announced a matching Midnight Black disc drive for JPY 11,980, or about Rs. 7,200. Together, the console and drive come to JPY 66,980, roughly Rs. 40,400. The drive is a separate purchase, so the base price doesn’t include it. If you mostly play digital games, you can skip it.
What’s in the Box
The new PS5 and its matching DualSense wireless controller both come in a dark black finish, which suits a black gaming setup. The color doesn’t change the core hardware or game performance. Sony has put its effort into the finish and the Japan-specific setup, not a power upgrade.
The box holds the console, a Midnight Black DualSense controller, an HDMI cable, USB cables, a power cord and horizontal feet. The game ASTRO’s PLAYROOM comes pre-installed. If you want to stand the console upright, you’ll have to buy the vertical stand separately. The detachable disc drive costs extra too, so your final price depends on how you set it up.

Hardware, Gaming Features
The Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition has an 825GB solid-state drive (SSD) for game storage. Inside are an eight-core AMD Zen 2 central processing unit (CPU), an AMD RDNA-based graphics processor rated at 10 teraflops and 16GB of GDDR6 memory. That’s the same core PS5 experience as the regular model.
The DualSense controller supports 3D audio, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, which add depth to sound and a physical feel to supported games. The console also plays PlayStation 4 games through backward compatibility. The black finish adds no graphics power, memory or storage, so current PS5 owners shouldn’t expect a performance boost.
Availability in India and Beyond
As of October 14, 2026, Sony hasn’t announced a release date or price for this Midnight Black PS5 in India, and it hasn’t confirmed any wider international launch. Indian buyers may have to wait for an official local release, or look at other supported PS5 models and black accessories.
Importing the console is moot as it requires Japanese to be the system language and a PlayStation account registered in Japan. It is a poor fit if you expect the same setup and account access as an Indian-market console. Shipping, customs duties, taxes and seller fees could also push the total well beyond a simple yen-to-rupee conversion.

Is it Worth Buying?
If you want a black console with the usual PS5 features, this one fits. The matching controller and dark finish are a clear style change, and the separate disc drive lets you choose between digital games and physical discs. However, with no performance upgrade, there’s little reason for current PS5 owners to swap out a console that still works.
If you’re in India, the safest move is to wait for an official local announcement or pick a PS5 model that supports the local market. The Japanese version has a clear price and release date, but its account and language limits matter more than the new color. A black design may look good, but local support and everyday use should drive the decision.
