Uzbekistan to Install HIV Self-Testing Devices Nationwide by 2026

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — More than 300 people in Uzbekistan have undergone HIV self-testing using Taxomat devices, which provide results from a saliva sample in approximately 20–40 minutes. The devices are scheduled to be installed in all regions of the country by the end of 2026.

Maftuna Saidova, press secretary of the Committee for Sanitary and Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health, announced the figures on October 20 at a briefing held at the Content Production Centre for Mass Media.

The initiative aims to expand access to anonymous screening and enable the early detection of HIV infection.

The introduction of self-testing programmes is предусмотрен by Presidential Resolution No. PP-14 dated January 20, 2023. Particular attention is being paid to making testing accessible to different population groups, including migrant workers.

Taxomat devices are being installed in crowded public places, airports and railway stations. They are already available at the Republican AIDS Centre, Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport, and airports in Andijan, Namangan, Surkhandarya, Bukhara, Kashkadarya, Navoi, Khorezm, Samarkand and Ferghana regions. The devices are also operating in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and at the Zaamin sanatorium in Jizzakh Region.

Testing is performed independently, without the involvement of medical personnel or invasive procedures. No specialised laboratory equipment is required. The approach may be convenient for people who are afraid of needles or blood tests, as well as those who need a quick and confidential screening option.

To use a device, individuals must scan an identity document, obtain a test and carry out the procedure using a saliva sample.

The information from the identity document is integrated into an electronic system and used, in accordance with established procedures, to provide feedback, medical consultations and referrals for further examination.

A positive self-test result does not mean that an HIV diagnosis has been confirmed. In such cases, individuals are informed that additional laboratory testing is necessary and are advised to contact their regional AIDS centre.

If the diagnosis is confirmed, the patient is immediately enrolled in free medical follow-up at the relevant regional centre and provided with antiretroviral therapy.

With timely treatment, adherence to the prescribed medication regimen and compliance with medical advice, people living with HIV can maintain good health for many years.
