The award recognises the Amir’s contributions to international mediation and peacebuilding, as Qatar continues to pursue diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts across the Middle East and beyond.
Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has been awarded a medal by the US-based Foreign Policy Association in recognition of his contributions to international mediation, diplomacy and peacebuilding.
The award was presented during a ceremony in New York on Thursday, where Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, accepted the medal on the Amir’s behalf.
The ceremony was attended by the association’s President and CEO Noel Lateef, Vice-Chairperson Sana Sabbagh, board members and other senior figures.
The association praised the Amir’s leadership in promoting international peace and security, particularly his commitment to dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution and multilateral cooperation.
The association’s board unanimously approved the award, recognising the Amir’s contributions to strengthening understanding and cooperation between countries.
In her acceptance speech, Sheikha Alya highlighted Qatar’s growing role as an international mediator under the Amir’s leadership, pointing to the country’s diplomatic involvement in Gaza, Afghanistan, Darfur, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Sheikha Alya explained that Qatar’s mediation approach is built on two principles: achieving sustainable peace through dialogue and ensuring that peace agreements are supported by reconstruction and development. She also stressed the importance of investing in education and opportunities for young people, describing these efforts as essential to preventing renewed conflict and building lasting stability in countries affected by war.
Addressing ongoing regional tensions, Sheikha Alya condemned Iran’s attacks on Qatar and other Gulf countries, as well as restrictions on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. She nevertheless reaffirmed Qatar’s support for Pakistan-led mediation efforts between the US and Iran to reduce tensions and seek a diplomatic resolution.
Sheikha Alya also emphasised the importance of maintaining dialogue during conflicts and highlighted Qatar’s strong partnership with the US in areas such as security, energy, education and investment.
Sheikha Alya conveyed the Amir’s appreciation to the Foreign Policy Association for the honour, describing the award as a recognition of the Amir’s contributions to promoting peace, diplomacy and dialogue.
