Blantyre District Council has called civil servants planning to protest Malawi’s contributory pension scheme to a meeting two weeks before their planned demonstration.
The Concerned Civil Servants on Contributory Pension Scheme in Malawi (CCS-CPSM) wants the government to return to the old pension system, citing concerns over pension contributions and alleged financial irregularities.
The demonstration is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
In a letter signed by Blantyre District Commissioner Alex Mdooko, the council has invited the group’s representatives to a round-table meeting on October 20 to discuss the planned protest and agree on the way forward.
The meeting will take place at the council’s Chamber Conference Room at 2pm.
The council said the engagement is intended to promote dialogue, maintain public order and coordinate discussions on the concerns raised by the group.
CCS-CPSM Secretary General Justin Mkwale previously told Malawi24 that the group is concerned about the management of pension contributions, the government’s alleged failure to remit its 10 percent contribution and suspected pension-related financial irregularities, including the Amaryllis Gate scandal.
Mkwale said previous efforts to resolve the concerns had yielded little progress, prompting the group to seek intervention from President Peter Mutharika.
The planned demonstration is expected to put renewed pressure on authorities to address the civil servants’ concerns over the pension system.
