BUSAN — Seo Tae-kyung, chief of Busan's Sasang District, visited the National Assembly on the 21st and urged Lim Keun-keun, head of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, to speed up the relocation of the Busan Detention Center. Lawmaker Park Hong-bae also attended the meeting.
"There are limits to resolving the relocation of the Busan Detention Center through talks between local governments alone," Seo said at the meeting. "Active mediation and coordination by the central government are needed." He asked that the Office for Government Policy Coordination join a four-party consultative body comprising the Ministry of Justice, the Busan Metropolitan Government, Sasang District and Gangseo District, and that a meeting of the relevant agencies be convened soon to begin substantive discussions.
At a parliamentary audit of the Office for Government Policy Coordination on the 13th of this month, Park said the Busan Detention Center was completed in 1973 and is now 53 years old. He called on the government to designate the relocation as a conflict requiring intensive management and to step in to mediate the dispute between Sasang District and Gangseo District.
"The agencies involved must take a responsible approach in finding a solution," Seo said. "We will work to advance the relocation discussions through coordination by the Office for Government Policy Coordination and consultations among the agencies."
