Dibrugarh, Oct 15: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday led a BJP Jan Jagaran rally in Dibrugarh, targeting the Congress over its opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and accusing the party of pursuing divisive politics.
Thousands of BJP workers and citizens took part in the rally, raising slogans of “Nation First, Always” and expressing support for the BJP’s emphasis on national unity, sovereignty and security.
Addressing the gathering, Sonowal accused the Congress of undermining national unity and questioning democratic institutions.
“The Congress is the seed of division, a patron of divisive politics and a political force weighed down by allegations of corruption. A party that raises questions about the nation’s unity, integrity and the credibility of democratic institutions must be answerable to the people,” he said.
The Union Minister asserted that the BJP would not compromise on matters concerning India’s sovereignty and security, alleging that misinformation was being spread to undermine the country’s progress.
“We reiterated our collective resolve: zero compromise on India’s unity, sovereignty and security. While divisive forces continue to spread misinformation, India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is marching forward towards empowerment and a Viksit Bharat,” Sonowal said.
He also questioned the Congress’s opposition to the SIR exercise, urging the party to substantiate its objections with evidence rather than political rhetoric.
“Instead of spreading propaganda in the name of opposing SIR, the Congress should place its objections before the nation with facts and logic,” he said.
Contrasting the BJP’s approach with that of the opposition, Sonowal credited Modi’s leadership with driving the country’s development, citing the government’s focus on poverty alleviation, youth empowerment, farmers’ welfare and women’s empowerment.
“Under the Prime Minister’s leadership, the country continues its journey of development, with the welfare of the poor, the empowerment of our youth, the progress of our farmers and the strengthening of Nari Shakti at its heart,” he said.
Sonowal said the participation of thousands of people reflected their commitment to national unity, public service and the vision of a developed India. He reiterated that national interest would remain paramount and that the BJP would continue to oppose what it considers politics contrary to the country’s interests.
Assam ministers Rameswar Teli and Bimal Borah, MLAs Prasanta Phukan, Binod Hazarika, Chakradhar Gogoi and Taranga Gogoi, BJP state general secretary Rituparna Baruah, and Dibrugarh district BJP president Dulal Bora were among those present.
