The Charlotte Hornets opened their season with a road win, beating the Brooklyn Nets 110-103. Charlotte heads to Spectrum Center tonight to take on the Atlanta Hawks, but two starters have already been ruled out: Kon Knueppel and Coby White.
Previously, the Hornets stated they would re-evaluate during the first week of the regular season. That time is now, and both players are still out. How concerned should Hornets fans be that Knueppel and White are still out due to injury?

Kon Knueppel’s Injury Is Extremely Impactful — But Not Alarming
Both Knueppel and White sustained injuries during training camp and missed every preseason game. Knueppel has a left hamstring strain, and White has a left calf strain. Soft tissue injuries are always a nuisance in any sport, and Charlotte has kept them out of games out of an abundance of caution.
The Hornets were able to squeak by with a win to open the season on Wednesday without Knueppel. Grayson Allen poured in 21 points on an extremely efficient 6-for-9 from the field (5-for-8 from three), showcasing his Sixth Man of the Year potential.
Brandon Miller, Naz Reid, Moussa Diabate, and Dennis Schroder all scored 17 or more points. Head Coach Charles Lee’s team got it done that night, but can they expect the same performance against a stronger team like the Atlanta Hawks?
The Hornets attempted 48 three-pointers against the Nets, accounting for 51.6 percent of all their shots. They only converted 31 percent of those 48 three-pointers, a brutal reminder of how Knueppel’s efficient shooting helps this offense so much. The turnovers were still relatively high at 20, which was one of the biggest Hornets storylines in the preseason.
Knueppel’s hamstring strain is not expected to be long-term. Since the Hornets never officially announced the grade of the strain, it should be assumed to be grade 1 (mild), which carries a shorter recovery timeline.

The Hornets are taking a cautious approach with their young star. When the franchise views you as a cornerstone in the post-LaMelo Ball era, it is okay to take it slow to begin the year. Knueppel also doesn’t have an extensive injury history.
His next chance to play would be Saturday vs. the Miami Heat. Expect Knueppel to return at some point before the October slate ends.
Coby White’s Recurring Calf Injury Is Very Concerning
On the other hand, White’s calf strain is worrisome. It was definitely an upgrade when the Hornets traded for White with multiple second-round picks and Collin Sexton, but availability is the best ability.
If Charlotte fans remember, when the Hornets originally acquired White, he was sidelined for a few weeks with a similar calf injury. The left calf injury during training camp is either a recurring injury or a setback from the original one.
White has had repeated calf injuries throughout his career, but the one silver lining is that he’s been able to play 60+ games in every season with the exception of last year. The question remains: will this be an occasional flare-up for the rest of his career?
When the Hornets traded the injury-plagued Ball, they signed White to a long-term deal to be their starting point guard. The hope is that he doesn’t end up having an injury-plagued career in Charlotte and repeat history all over again.
The Last Word
The Hornets are going to proceed with caution and ensure both of these players are fully healthy before they get on the court. It’s the best decision, but it leaves the Hornets at a moderate disadvantage.
Even if Knueppel’s injury isn’t too worrisome and he returns in the next week, the Hornets could possibly be without White for a longer timetable since he has a longer injury history of repeated calf issues.
If that happens, then it’s the Schroder/Christian Anderson Jr. show until further notice — a bleak outlook considering the Hornets’ grueling schedule in the upgraded Eastern Conference.
