Bulgaria is considering additional restrictions for newly qualified drivers during their first two years on the road, including limits on car engine power, a requirement to drive with an experienced accompanying driver for a certain period, and mandatory additional practical training.
Transport Minister Georgi Peev announced the proposals during a road safety training demonstration at the Dragon circuit near Plovdiv. According to the minister, nearly 50% of accidents involving young drivers in 2025 were single-vehicle crashes.
The ministry also plans to build at least six specialised training facilities where new drivers can learn how to respond to dangerous situations.
The proposals will be discussed as part of a national road safety strategy.
