Quinta Vale D. Maria has opened a new €1.5 million wine tourism project in the Douro, combining tastings, gastronomy and architecture with a strong focus on the estate’s old vines.
Located in Ervedosa do Douro, near the Rio Torto, in the municipality of São João da Pesqueira, the revamped visitor space aims to strengthen the historic estate’s position as a wine tourism destination while telling the story of its vineyards, wines and century-old buildings.

“Quinta Vale D. Maria is part of the history of the Douro, having been one of the pioneering estates in the production of still DOC Douro wines,” said Martim Guedes, co-CEO of Aveleda.
“With its unique location, Quinta Vale D. Maria strengthens the region’s premium tourism offer through its wine heritage and personalised experiences.”
Designed by architect Diogo Aguiar, the project sought to preserve and enhance existing features, including the estate’s original century-old house, while ensuring the architecture remains closely connected to the surrounding Douro landscape.
One of its standout additions is the Adega Expositiva – Guardiã das Vinhas Velhas, an exhibition space dedicated to explaining the importance of old vines to both Quinta Vale D. Maria and the wider Douro.
Tastings, masterclasses and picnics
Visitors can choose from a range of experiences, including tastings of some of the estate’s flagship wines, such as Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinhas Velhas, Vinha da Francisca and Vinha do Rio.
There are also masterclasses dedicated to old vines and Vintage Port, as well as the option of booking a more intimate tasting with the winemaker.

Food pairings and picnics make use of local products including olive oil, coração de boi tomatoes and almonds, while lunches created by Douro chef Miguel Monteiro can also be arranged on request.
“The offer was designed to provide exclusive experiences with a very personalised character,” said the estate’s wine tourism director Ildefonso Martins.
“In the fine-wine segment, both Portuguese and international visitors value experiences that allow them to understand the terroir, the history and the people behind the wines they enjoy.”

The new wine tourism centre estimates it will welcome around 3,000 visitors a year. Its Sala Rio tasting room accommodates up to 24 people.
Quinta Vale D. Maria is open from 9.30am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday, closing on Wednesdays.
