Youth leaders in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have called on the state government to strengthen efforts to combat drug abuse among young people, warning that the growing misuse of tramadol and other dangerous substances poses a serious threat to their health and well-being.
The call was made during a meeting between Caretaker Governor Charles Madut Akol and youth leaders, who identified drug abuse as one of the major challenges affecting young people across the state.
George Atem Garang, Chairperson of the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Youth Union, said drug abuse was among the key concerns raised during the meeting.
“The misuse of tramadol and other dangerous substances is one of the major challenges affecting young people in our state. We are calling on the government to strengthen its efforts to address this problem and protect our youth,” Garang said.
The youth leaders also called for increased government support to tackle drug abuse, improve access to education and expand employment opportunities for young people.
“Young people need more support and opportunities, including access to education and employment, to help them build a better future,” the youth leaders said.
The meeting brought together youth representatives from the state’s five counties to present challenges facing young people and call for greater government involvement in addressing their concerns.
The youth leaders also emphasized the importance of meaningful youth participation in the upcoming elections scheduled for December 22, 2026.
“We encourage young people to take an active role in the electoral process and participate meaningfully in shaping the future of our state,” the youth representatives said.
They urged young people to contribute to the state’s democratic development by taking part in the electoral process.
