Los Angeles Lakers guard Collin Sexton took a step towards returning to the court after suffering a lower-leg injury during training camp.
Sexton participated in everything but the live portion of the Lakers’ practice on Thursday, and head coach JJ Redick says he is “trending in the right direction” to feature in the Lakers’ season opener against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 21.

Sexton signed a two-year, $19.2 million deal with the Lakers in the offseason and will serve as a key rotational piece in the Lakers’ backcourt behind guards Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves for the upcoming season—serving as the team’s sixth man.
The 2026-27 season will be Sexton’s ninth in the NBA following stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Utah Jazz, Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls, with whom he has averaged 18.3 points per game while shooting 47.2% from the field. He split last year between the Hornets and Bulls, featuring in 68 games while starting just 22—averaging 15.4 points per game with 3.3 assists on 23.7 minutes per game.
An adept 3-point shooter, Sexton shot 40.1% from beyond the arc last season on 4.1 attempts per game, which will be a big boost to a Lakers team which struggled from deep last year. Los Angeles averaged 32.9 shots from deep per game last year, ranking 24th in the league, and sunk just 35.9% of their attempts—14th best in the NBA.
Who Else Did the Lakers Sign This Offseason?
Sexton is one of several new players who will figure into the Lakers’ rotation this year, as they had an active offseason following the departures of LeBron James and DeAndre Ayton—signing a multitude of players to play in their stead.
The Lakers made a blockbuster trade for Walker Kessler to kick off free agency, followed by signings of Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Matisse Thybulle, Ziaire Williams and of course Sexton.
With all of these new players in their midst, the Lakers will look to make a deep run in the postseason after the Oklahoma City Thunder swept them in the second round of last year’s NBA Playoffs. They’ll hope Sexton is good to go for their season opener against the Warriors, which comes Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
