Let's Talk About Menopause

Menopause is often discussed in terms of hot flashes, night sweats, and changing hormone levels. Yet for many women, menopause represents something far more profound: a biopsychosocial transition that touches nearly every aspect of life, including emotional well-being, relationships, cognition, work, and identity.

While fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels can contribute to mood changes, anxiety, sleep disruption, and difficulties with concentration, menopause rarely occurs in isolation. Midlife often coincides with major life transitions such as caring for aging parents, navigating career changes, reassessing long-term relationships, experiencing children leaving home, and confronting questions about aging, purpose, and mortality.

As psychologists, we know that biological changes unfold within a broader psychological and social context. Menopause is no exception.

Recent reports from the 2025 American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Women's Health and Well-Being During Midlife and Menopause emphasize that menopause is not simply a medical event but a significant biopsychosocial experience that warrants greater attention from researchers, health care professionals, clinicians, policymakers, and medical and mental health systems. The task force's reports highlight persistent research gaps in understanding women's mental health during midlife while also calling for more comprehensive, evidence-informed, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed models of care (APA, 2026).

The reports underscore several important realities. Midlife and menopause affect roughly half the population, yet many women continue to encounter misinformation, stigma, inadequate provider training, and fragmented care. The task force recommends strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration among medical and mental health professionals, expanding clinician education on menopause, improving access to quality care, and increasing research focused on the psychological dimensions of the menopause transition (APA, 2026).

One of the most important contributors to this emerging body of work is Dr. Rebecca Thurston, a leading menopause researcher and co-chair of the APA task force reports. Drawing upon decades of research, including the landmark Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), Thurston has helped illuminate how menopause affects not only reproductive health but also cardiovascular health, sleep, cognition, brain aging, and mental health.

In a recent episode of my Wellness in Today's World podcast, Thurston discussed menopause as a whole-person experience rather than a narrow hormonal condition. She highlighted growing evidence that symptoms such as hot flashes and sleep disruption may provide important information about broader health processes, including cardiovascular and brain health. Her work encourages both women and health care professionals to think more expansively about menopause and its implications for long-term well-being.

Importantly, the conversation around menopause is evolving. Historically, menopause has often been framed primarily as a period of loss or decline. Emerging research tells a more nuanced story. While some women experience substantial distress and impairment, others report increased self-confidence, greater self-awareness, stronger boundary-setting, and a renewed sense of purpose. The APA reports (2025) explicitly recognize both the challenges and strengths associated with this life stage, emphasizing resilience, growth, and adaptation.

Psychological support can play a vital role during this transition. Effective interventions may include psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioral approaches, mindfulness-based strategies, sleep interventions, stress management techniques, and strengthening of social connections. Mental health professionals are uniquely positioned to help women differentiate between symptoms related to menopause, life stressors, and mental health conditions while supporting healthy adaptation through midlife.

Perhaps the most important message is that menopause deserves recognition as a significant developmental transition that often extends into periods before and beyond when menopause is typically experienced. It is not merely the end of reproductive capacity but a complex intersection of biological change, psychological development, and social transition.

As awareness grows and research advances, we have an opportunity to move beyond stigma and toward a more comprehensive understanding of women's health during midlife and menopause. This can only be accomplished through scientific rigor and compassionate whole-person care. Taking a biopsychosocial systems approach allows us to support flourishing, resilience, and well-being throughout the second half of life.
