The NBA will no longer allow certain types of bets that would appear to be the lowest-hanging fruit for potential conspirators.
According to The Associated Press, the NBA sent a memo to sportsbook partners on Friday. Gamblers are now banned from combining the under on a single player’s statistics into parlays.
The NBA instructed official betting partners, including FanDuel and DraftKings, to stop offering wagers on opening tip winners, specific missed shots by players, and under bets for players projected to participate for under 12 minutes in a contest. Through its contractual agreements, the NBA holds authority to restrict wager offerings at partner sportsbooks, which the league estimates represent more than 99% of the U.S. sports betting market.
The new restrictions follow federal investigations involving NBA players Terry Rozier and Jontay Porter, which featured parlay wagers placed on the unders of individual players.
In a separate memo sent to franchises on Friday, the NBA detailed updated integrity protocols being implemented for the current season. Retired FBI agent and former NFL player Charles Tillman will conduct face-to-face training sessions regarding league gambling policies. Additionally, the NBA is upgrading its internal AI-driven data surveillance system, which is built to identify and probe suspicious betting patterns related to games or events.
The NBA also updated its fan code of conduct to emphasize regulations concerning threats or harassment. The league partnered with Social Protect, an outside service that detects and removes abusive social media posts, and established a text-based hotline for reporting threats.
