Adam Bogdan Reveals Liverpool Regrets, Klopp’s Intensity and Goalkeeping Struggles
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Adam Bogdan has spoken candidly about his time at Anfield, the extraordinary demands of playing under Jürgen Klopp, the mistakes that affected his confidence and the decision he wishes he had made differently.
Speaking to Alison Bender on the After The Final Whistle podcast, the former Hungary international reflected on joining Liverpool from Bolton Wanderers in 2015, adapting to an increasingly demanding training environment and the psychological pressures of representing one of football’s biggest clubs.
His recollections provide a fascinating account of life inside Liverpool during a period of considerable change.
Adam Bogdan Recalls Liverpool Transfer and Klopp’s Training Demands
Bogdan was preparing to leave Bolton after eight years when Liverpool’s interest emerged. He and his pregnant wife were driving back to Hungary when his agent called.
“I had a phone call from my agent that it looks like Liverpool is getting serious,” Bogdan recalled.
“Of course it’s a bit of a wow, like it’s unbelievable, you know, you could be part of a club like that.”
His introduction to Liverpool was physically demanding. After his daughter’s birth, Bogdan returned to Melwood before travelling with the squad to Australia.
“Massive. Massive. Because physically it was just like you surviving. You’re trying your best.”
He remembered struggling during a training rondo until Alberto Moreno eventually allowed him to escape.
Bogdan also highlighted the relentless standards established by senior players.
“The intensity of Jordan Henderson, the intensity of Milner,” he recalled, mentioning Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino among the squad.
When Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers, those demands increased again.
“I remember the first game in Tottenham I was on the bench and I just couldn’t believe like is it this possible.”
Bogdan explained how Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino helped raise the physical standards of elite football.
“It’s down to those guys, you know, Pochettino and Klopp to keep increasing.”
He now draws on that experience in his role as sporting director, particularly the lessons surrounding recruitment, expectations and creating the right environment.
Liverpool Goalkeeping Mistakes and Watford Controversy
Bender raised the Watford match, when Bogdan’s handling error became a defining talking point of his Liverpool career.
The goalkeeper recalled that he had finally begun feeling comfortable with the required physical standards.
“I got to a point in December where I was already feeling like quite good, up to the level, up to the speed, up to everything.”
He maintained that the incident involved a foul.
“Yeah, it was a foul because he kicked it out of my hand, but the referee didn’t see it.”
Bogdan acknowledged Liverpool’s difficulties during the match and subsequently suffered another setback when he conceded directly from a corner in an FA Cup fixture.
He explained that his response to those mistakes became particularly damaging.
“I was devastated and I think people could see it that I was so angry with myself.”
For Bogdan, the psychological consequences were significant.
“Sometimes you’re going to make a mistake in the second game. It’s how you react.”
He believed the coaching staff could recognise his difficulties recovering emotionally.
“He’s not that resilient and we can’t afford to have that.”
Bender also asked about the scrutiny accompanying mistakes at Liverpool. Bogdan acknowledged that public criticism would continue, while emphasising the importance of creating another opportunity.
Adam Bogdan Admits He Should Have Stayed Longer at Liverpool
One of Bogdan’s clearest regrets concerns his decision to leave Liverpool on loan.
With Hungary preparing for the European Championship, he initially requested a January move to secure regular football. Liverpool retained him because they needed three goalkeepers.
By the following summer, he had decided to leave.
“If I could go back and change something, I would have given myself more time.”
Bender clarified whether he specifically meant more time at Liverpool, and Bogdan confirmed that he did.
He explained that his second preseason had felt considerably more manageable.
“Everything, the surroundings, the goalkeeping coach, everything was more comfortable so I could perform better.”
However, Liverpool had signed Loris Karius, and Bogdan was unwilling to remain as third choice.
“At 28 I didn’t want to be a third choice.”
He subsequently joined Wigan Athletic, where a serious knee injury disrupted his career.
The recovery proved exceptionally difficult.
“I couldn’t progress with the rehab.”
Bogdan eventually returned to Hungary for treatment and credited that period with helping his rehabilitation progress.

Alisson, Anfield Pressure and Bogdan’s Honest Assessment
Perhaps the most revealing part of Bender’s interview concerned the confidence required to succeed as a Liverpool goalkeeper.
Bogdan described himself as a perfectionist and admitted that mistakes had always affected him deeply.
“Every time I made a mistake in high-profile games, just had the same feeling in my stomach.”
He contrasted his own reactions with those of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
“If let’s say Alisson makes a mistake he’s not going to affect him for the rest of the game and it’s not going to affect him for the next game.”
Bogdan acknowledged the personal burden he experienced.
“For me it always felt like the end of the world really.”
Discussing the pressure of performing at Anfield and other major stadiums, he offered a particularly candid assessment.
“At the very, very top you need to have an undoubtedly self-confidence.”
He admitted that this quality had sometimes been missing from his own game.
“When you were knocked down deep down, I didn’t have that undeniable confidence in myself.”
His reflections underline the importance Bogdan places on resilience, emotional control and the support surrounding a goalkeeper.
For Liverpool supporters, the interview offers a detailed account of his experiences during Klopp’s early months, the difficulties he encountered and the decisions he continues to reflect upon.
Bogdan’s appreciation of Liverpool’s training standards and the lessons he learned at the club remain evident in his work today.
