What is the core problem Google solved?
To perform useful, real-world calculations — a standard known as universal quantum computing — a quantum system must run complex operations using specialised building blocks called "magic states."
However, magic states are notoriously fragile, prone to noise, and cannot be reused once consumed. Historically, generating clean magic states required so much error-correction overhead that up to 95% of a quantum computer's total processing capacity would be consumed just making them, leaving only 5% for actual computing.
Some magical progress towards "magic state" in quantum! Our @GoogleQuantumAI team has demonstrated "magic state cultivation" on physical hardware for the first time. The result is a 40x error reduction on our Willow processor vs. previous methods, achieving a state-of-the-art 99.99% logical fidelity. It's another step towards useful, error-corrected quantum computers to help solve the hardest problems. The result is published in Science today, watch the video below to see how it works

How 'magic state cultivation' works?
Developed theoretically by Google Quantum AI researchers Craig Gidney, Noah Shutty, and Cody Jones in 2024, cultivation acts like a high-precision digital filter:
- Injection: A noisy, imperfect quantum state is introduced into a small region of the quantum chip.
- Filtration: The system runs tightly coordinated measurements to detect and purge errors in real time.
- Growth: The surviving state is "cultivated" into an exceptionally pure, low-error T-state.
- Grafting: The purified state is transferred smoothly across different quantum error-correction encodings (switching from color codes used during cultivation to surface codes used for broader computation).
What were the key experimental results?
Testing the protocol on Google’s Willow processor yielded major technical milestones:
- 40x error reduction: Cultivated states suffered roughly 40 times fewer errors compared to un-cultivated states.
- 99.99% fidelity: The team produced T-states with a record 99.99% logical fidelity.
- Architecture compatibility: The hardware successfully transferred purified states from a distance-3 color code to a distance-5 surface code, proving the approach works within a physical system.
What challenges did the researchers face in the lab?
Bringing the theory to physical hardware required resolving unexpected physical anomalies. During initial runs, environmental noise — caused by micro-variations in room temperature and electrical equipment drift — distorted measurement benchmarks.
To overcome this, Google Quantum AI research scientist Emma Rosenfeld and the team added enhanced hardware controls to suppress environmental drift and developed a self-referential benchmarking technique that uses the cultivation process itself to measure accuracy.
Why it matters for the future of computing?
By slashing the resource tax required to generate magic states, magic state cultivation drastically reduces the physical size and qubit count needed to build a useful quantum computer. While large-scale manufacturing and system scaling remain ahead, the experiment proves that a major theoretical bottleneck can be solved on real physical hardware.
