Little ones will be delighted with this edible train kit. It includes seven classic gingerbread biscuits and was fun and easy to slot together.
Also provided are iced lebkuchen (a soft German biscuit similar to gingerbread, but heavier on the cloves and cardamon), two bags of gummy sweets and Smarties. It looked amazing once complete.

If gingerbread doesn’t do it for you, why not make your edible house with classic Cadbury’s Dairy Milk chocolate instead? Each pack includes blocks of delicious milk and white chocolate, buttons and a Flake.
Instead of icing, you melt the edges, so they stick together, and the roof features ‘tiles’ of Christmas trees in lieu of iced decorations.

This is an easy-to-build house if you’re thinking of getting the kids involved. The soft biscuit is well spiced, with ginger lingering on the palate, and it isn’t overly sweet. The thick icing successfully held the panels in place and provided a good base for the multi-coloured sprinkles.

This was the most expensive kit we tested, but it did feel particularly luxurious (so it's probably best saved for the adults to decorate!). Alongside the pre-made panels, the box includes icing sugar, red food colouring, a piping bag, sugared balls and smarties.
The biscuit itself is beautifully buttery and very lightly spiced, and the variety of decorations made the build extra fun! The biscuits were also perfectly sturdy and slotted together well, and there’s a step-by-step online decoration guide for those who need some inspiration.

Building a gingerbread house doesn't need to end in tears. ASDA's kit comes with a sturdy base to make assembly refreshingly straightforward, while colourful Smarties and star decorations add plenty of festive fun. Better still, the gingerbread itself is packed with warming spice, making it just as enjoyable to eat as it is to build.

If decorating is your favourite part, M&S has you covered. The kit comes with colourful sprinkles, Jelly Tots and three icing nozzles, giving little bakers plenty of scope to get creative. The mellow, crunchy gingerbread tastes as good as it looks, while the sturdy base makes building refreshingly fuss-free.

Lakeland’s take on the traditional gingerbread house comes with five chunky panels, (including a base) as well as smarties, sprinkles and sugared figurines. Like the Biscuiteers kit (above) you make the icing yourself with the sugar and piping bag included, so it can be as thick or runny as you please.
The biscuit isn’t overly spicy, while the smarties add a welcome pop of colour, but it was the sugared people and dog that really made this festive scene complete.

Why build one gingerbread house when you can have two? This mini village is perfect for siblings or festive playdates, with enough biscuits to keep little hands busy together. We'd recommend warming the icing before decorating, but once assembled, the houses hold their shape well and are great fun to personalise.
