eMudhra is exiting the global certificate business after a massive security lapse where \"dangerously simple\" keys left 30,000 websites vulnerable to AI-assisted impersonation.
Digital security firm eMudhra is officially exiting the global SSL/TLS certificate business. These certificates act as the digital equivalent of a passport for websites, verifying that a site is legitimate and encrypting the data sent between a user and the server. This decision follows a major security failure that left thousands of websites vulnerable to hackers.
The core of the problem was a flaw in the digital locks used to secure these certificates. Instead of using complex, random mathematical codes that are nearly impossible to guess, the company used keys that were incredibly simple. In some cases, the security key was as basic as the number 4. Because these keys were so weak, modern artificial intelligence tools could guess them almost instantly, allowing attackers to impersonate secure websites. This massive security lapse was detailed in Post 132665, which highlighted the severity of what is now being called \”Black October.\”
The failure was traced back to a human error during a computer ceremony in 2025. A script—a set of automated instructions for a computer—was misconfigured, causing the system to generate these dangerously simple keys across eight different branch offices, which are secondary authorities that issue certificates on behalf of the main company. Despite the gravity of the mistake, the issue remained hidden for 18 months. A warning about the weak keys was issued in June 2025, but it was ignored, allowing the vulnerability to persist until it was finally exposed.
The fallout has been significant. By October 20, 2026, major web browsers like Chrome and Firefox had blocked the affected certificates to protect their users. This action has forced the owners of 30,000 websites to scramble for new security stamps to keep their sites accessible and safe. As one observer noted regarding the ease with which AI agents could recover these keys, the situation serves as a stark reminder of how quickly automated tools can exploit even the smallest human oversight.
While eMudhra is stepping away from the global certificate market, the company stated it will continue its other operations. This includes its digital signature business, known as emSign, and its ongoing work with government projects within India. For the rest of the internet, the focus now shifts to the cleanup, as thousands of website administrators work to replace their compromised security credentials.
