Uzbekistan plans to implement major water supply and road infrastructure projects in Kashkadarya region, including the reconstruction of a 100-kilometer section of the A-380 highway worth $350mn and the expansion of drinking water networks serving hundreds of thousands of residents.
The initiatives were discussed during a meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the socio-economic development of Kashkadarya region. During the meeting, the president identified access to clean drinking water as one of the region's most pressing issues and issued instructions to accelerate infrastructure development.
As part of the ongoing infrastructure program, UZS 1 trillion ($83.8mn) has been allocated this year to improve water supply and sewage systems across Kashkadarya. Officials have been instructed to complete the construction of 747 kilometers of water and sewage networks, along with 43 infrastructure facilities, within two months.
According to the plans presented at the meeting, the completion of these projects will provide 200,000 residents with access to clean drinking water. Another major initiative involves extending a water supply network from the Hisorak reservoir to the city of Karshi and the Kamashi, Guzar and Karshi districts. An initial UZS 100bn (over $8.3mn) has been allocated to launch the project.
During the meeting, Mirziyoyev instructed officials to secure an additional $210mn to ensure the project's implementation. Once completed, the new water supply network is expected to provide clean drinking water to approximately 350,000 residents.
The government is also launching a project to reconstruct the Tolimarjon–Muborak water supply system. The project is intended to improve drinking water access for another 700,000 residents across five districts: Nishon, Kasbi, Mirishkor, Muborak and Karshi. Officials have been tasked with completing the project's technical and economic feasibility studies by April 1.
The government also plans to attract $150mn in financing for the reconstruction. In addition to water infrastructure, the meeting addressed major road development projects aimed at improving transport connections across Kashkadarya. In cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Uzbekistan will begin reconstructing a 100-kilometer section of the A-380 highway passing through the region.
The total value of the project is estimated at $350mn. Another project involves extending the bypass road around the city of Qarshi by 5.5 kilometers and connecting it to the A-380 highway. Officials have been instructed to complete the project's feasibility studies by the end of this year, with construction scheduled to begin in January.
The meeting also addressed traffic congestion at railway crossings along the Karshi–Pomuq and G‘uzor–Beynau roads. According to the information presented, vehicles experience significant delays at these crossings when trains pass. To address the issue, two modern overpasses will be constructed at the affected locations. The combined cost of the two projects is estimated at UZS 250bn (around $21mn).
