A 26-year-old man was shot dead and another youth was injured in a shooting in the Alinagar area of Barabkunda in Sitakunda, Chattogram, last night.
The deceased was Tarek Hossain Bappi, a resident of Miazipara in Madhyam Mahmudabad of Sitakunda. The injured youth was identified as Tafsir Alam.
Abu Hena Mostafa, inspector of Sitakunda Model Police Station, told The Daily Star that police had initially learnt that the killing was linked to a dispute over establishing dominance in the area.
“A police team is working at the scene. The reason behind the killing will be known after an investigation,” he said.
Nurul Alam, sub-inspector and in-charge of the police outpost at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said the two men with bullet injuries were brought to the hospital’s emergency department around 11:00pm.
“Doctors declared one of them dead, while the other was admitted to the casualty ward,” he said.
The deceased’s brother, Rahim Khan Babu, told The Daily Star that Bappi and another man were travelling on a motorcycle when unidentified assailants opened fire on them and fled.
“My brother was shot in the chest and died at the spot,” he said.
