Another 100 companies wrote the European executive body to preserve EU green hydrogen targets. Meanwhile, the European Commission selected 77 net-zero projects, including several hydrogen projects.
UFI Hydrogen has unveiled a new generation of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) at Hydrogen Technology World Expo in Hamburg, Germany. The Italian company, part of the UFI Group, said the platform integrates seven functional components into a single assembly, compared with three in its existing MEA technology, to reduce iridium consumption and simplify stack manufacturing. While conventional three-component MEAs require electrolyzer manufacturers to source, integrate and qualify additional components separately, the new architecture is designed to reduce supplier interfaces and streamline procurement, testing and qualification. The company said the reduction in iridium use is achieved through improvements in MEA architecture, functional components and catalyst configuration, although it has not disclosed specific catalyst loadings or performance figures. The platform can also be customized to manufacturers’ stack requirements, including geometries, dimensions, membrane characteristics, catalyst selection and component interfaces. “The MEA is the chip of electrochemistry: it is where a decisive share of an electrolyzer’s performance and competitiveness is determined,” said CEO Marco Lazzaroni. The company aims to work directly with electrolyzer manufacturers on the design and qualification of customized assemblies, reducing integration risks. The new product is undergoing industrial scale-up, with testing, validation and integration activities planned with stack manufacturers. Series production is scheduled to begin in 2027, while UFI Hydrogen’s existing three-component MEA technology will remain in production.
GeoPura said it has deployed hydrogen power units (HPUs) at concerts, festivals and golf tournaments to supply electricity while reducing air pollution near stages, production areas and crowds. The UK-based company said the deployments helped protect the health of artists, crews and attendees. Its energy-as-a-service offering combines power generation equipment, hydrogen supply, transport, on-site storage and operational support. GeoPura was recently acquired by Ballard Power Systems.
The Hydrogen Council said another 100 companies have signed an industry letter urging the European Commission to maintain the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) targets and mandates for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) in transport and industry beyond 2030, bringing the total number of signatories to 260. “The letter stresses removing RFNBO targets would not simplify anything. It would waste six years of work, shake the market, punish first movers, and undermine confidence in EU climate and energy policy,” said the council, which coordinated the initiative with Hydrogen Europe and the Renewable Hydrogen Coalition. Signatories include European companies Axpo, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), Iberdrola, De Nora, Ingeteam, Siemens Energy and Snam, as well as non-European companies Adani, Acwa Power, Air Products, Hitachi, Masdar and Toyota.
The European Commission has selected 77 net-zero technology projects across Europe for €3.4 billion ($3.9 billion) in funding from revenues generated by the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). The selected projects include a medium-scale project in the Netherlands, small-scale projects in France and Latvia, and two pilot projects in Germany. The commission also selected a Belgian project to scale up solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology and an Italian project to expand solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and SOEC manufacturing. Several large-scale projects, primarily involving refineries, will focus on increasing low-carbon hydrogen production and consumption.
The Oxford Institute for Energy Studies said automated data collection through smart meters and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, robust validation and audit trails, secure digital identities, and interoperable certificate registries could facilitate compliance with hourly electricity matching requirements and hydrogen certification schemes. In a research paper examining digital measurement, reporting and verification (dMRV), the institute proposed a modular architecture covering data collection, quality assurance, eligibility and emissions calculations, evidence management, independent verification and certificate issuance. It also outlined several possible dMRV architectures, including hybrid systems, permissioned distributed ledgers and upgraded centralized registries.
Stiesdal Hydrogen has brought a 6.5 MW electrolyzer into commercial operation at European Energy’s green hydrogen facility in Måde, Denmark. The system was upgraded from 3.1 MW in September 2026 and has supplied hydrogen to offtakers at operating loads of up to 6.5 MW since Sept. 29. The facility has been producing hydrogen since 2023. “The upgraded 6.5 MW system sits within the same plant. From the outside, the only visible addition is an extra converter cabinet. At nominal load, the facility can now produce up to 1,270 Nm³ of hydrogen per hour,” said the two Danish companies.
American Electric Power (AEP) plans to invest approximately $4 billion in a 702 MW fuel cell power generation project in Wyoming, United States, under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google. The Ohio-based utility said construction is expected to begin in 2026, with the facility scheduled to become fully operational by the end of 2028. The project will use advanced fuel cell technology developed by Bloom Energy.
Resato, a Dutch manufacturer of hydrogen refueling equipment, has declared bankruptcy and invited potential investors to participate in a sales process. The company said it had made progress toward a possible restart during a suspension of payments, including reaching agreements with customers, continuing projects and holding advanced discussions with prospective investors. “Although it was not possible to finalise all necessary agreements within the available timeframe, the progress achieved provides a valuable foundation for the next phase,” Resato said.
