By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 45-year-old father in Guyana has reportedly confessed to killing his six-year-old son by throwing him into the water, knowing he could not swim, after allegedly being told by a spiritual advisor that the child was not biologically his.
Bharrat Jaikarran is accused of killing his son, Orlando Jaikarran, whose decomposing body was discovered early Tuesday morning, October 20, in a canal at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice. The boy had been missing since October 14.
According to the Guyana Chronicle, Jaikarran reportedly told investigators that he had consulted a pujari, a Hindu religious officiant who conducts religious ceremonies and may also provide spiritual guidance. He claimed the spiritual advisor told him Orlando was not his biological son, although that allegation has not been independently verified.
Investigators were reportedly told that Jaikarran rode his motorcycle to an area near the sea dam, left it there and returned home to collect Orlando. He allegedly took the child back to the location and threw him into the water despite knowing that the six-year-old could not swim.
The father reportedly admitted knowing that a neighbour had surveillance cameras but believed his movements would not raise suspicion because Orlando frequently accompanied him on early-morning fishing trips.
According to News Room Guyana, police obtained information from the father that led them to the child’s body. Investigators also reviewed surveillance footage reportedly showing the father travelling with the child before returning alone.
Jaikarran had initially reported Orlando missing and denied harming him. However, as investigators gathered evidence, he reportedly confessed to the killing and provided information that led police to the location of the boy’s remains.
The tragedy has sparked outrage in Guyana, with Minister of Human Services and Social Security Vindhya Persaud condemning the killing and warning against religious figures who make harmful claims under the guise of spiritual guidance.
The case has also raised concerns about the influence of spiritual beliefs and the devastating consequences of acting on unverified claims.
Jaikarran remains in police custody as investigators continue their investigation. A post-mortem examination is expected to establish Orlando’s cause of death.
