East Carolina has won its last three meetings against Memphis, but the Pirates face a tough challenge Thursday night as they look to extend that streak on the road. Both teams enter the matchup with 2-1 records in American Conference play and are looking to bounce back after suffering their first conference losses of the season.
ECU scored with barely a minute left on the clock last year to edge this tie 31-27, which is somehow the biggest margin that has separated the pair during the Pirates’ current three-win streak in the head-to-head. East Carolina won their previous encounters by margins of two points and one point in 2022 and 2021, respectively.
First-year Memphis head coach is in position to change all that, however, and will be as motivated as ever following a 31-17 defeat at Tulane last week. A 5-2 overall record (2-1 in conference games) is still enough to inspire hope this could be a year the Tigers change their stripes, though this week’s home clash will have a big say in that matter.
Junior quarterback Marcus Stokes has added fuel to that fire after bombing his way to 1,841 passing yards and 18 touchdown throws for the season so far. Only three players in college football this year have completed more scoring passes, while plenty of attention will be on star Memphis running back Jaylin Carter to add to his nine scores (eight rushing, one reception).
