The object was initially detected by surveillance personnel and Israel Air Force detection systems, which tracked its movement and directed troops on the ground as the incident unfolded.
An unidentified aerial object that prompted security alerts in northern Israel on Saturday night was most likely a balloon or a device kept aloft by hot air, rather than a drone, the IDF said on Tuesday following an extensive investigation into the incident.
The military said it could not conclusively determine the object's origin or purpose, but had ruled out the possibility that it was a drone or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
According to the IDF, the object may have been entirely harmless and could have drifted into Israeli territory unintentionally.
The object was initially detected by surveillance personnel and Israel Air Force detection systems, which tracked its movement and directed troops on the ground as the incident unfolded.
The military said defensive measures were reinforced in nearby communities, including the deployment of local defense units, while checks were carried out to determine the nature of the potential threat.
Despite extensive searches, the object has not been located, and no changes have been made to Home Front Command guidelines.
The incident began on Saturday evening, when hostile aircraft infiltration alerts were activated in the Western Galilee, near the Lebanese border. Initial concerns centered on the possibility that a drone had entered Israeli airspace, prompting searches and additional security measures in the area.
IDF soldiers continued searching near the community of Arab el-Aramsha on Sunday, after surveillance systems detected the unidentified object. At the time, the military had not ruled out several possibilities regarding its identity.
IDF addresses recent false alarms and interceptions
The military explained that distinguishing between a small drone and a bird can be extremely difficult, requiring air defense personnel to respond rapidly whenever a potential threat is identified.
Separately, the IDF has been investigating recent interceptor launches against suspicious aerial targets near Israeli troops operating in southern Lebanon, as questions remain about the identity of several objects detected by military systems.
The IDF said it would continue searching on the ground and in the air while regularly reviewing its detection systems to improve identification capabilities and learn from operational incidents.
