Booking a flight could become easier for Ugandans as MTN MoMo introduces a travel feature that allows users to search for flights, compare fares, and pay directly through the mobile money application.
The Travel by MoMo feature is designed to simplify the booking process by allowing customers to arrange their journeys using their mobile money wallets, reducing reliance on physical travel agents or international bank cards.
The service targets a broad range of travellers, including businesspeople travelling for trade, students moving between regional universities, and families planning holidays or visiting relatives abroad.
To use the service, customers need to download or update the MoMo app, log in, and ensure their wallets have sufficient funds to cover the cost of their tickets.
Users can access the feature under the Lifestyle section on the app's home screen by selecting Travel. They can then enter their departure and destination cities, choose their travel dates, and indicate whether they need a one-way or return ticket.
The platform displays available flight options, allowing travellers to compare airlines, departure times, stopovers, and fares before making a selection.
After choosing a flight, customers enter the passenger details required for the booking and proceed to payment through their MoMo wallets. Once the transaction is approved using their mobile money PIN, the booking confirmation and electronic ticket are sent to their phones.
Travellers are advised to ensure that names and other personal details match their travel documents to avoid complications during check-in.
Simplifying access to air travel
The introduction of mobile money payments for flight bookings reflects the growing role of digital financial services in making everyday transactions more convenient.
For traders travelling to international markets, students heading to universities across East Africa, and families planning holiday trips, the ability to pay for flights through a mobile money wallet offers an alternative to conventional payment methods.
The service could also benefit customers who do not have access to international debit or credit cards but can fund and use a mobile money account.
However, travelers should confirm the baggage allowance, ticket conditions, and any additional charges associated with their selected fare before completing payment.
Those travelling internationally should also check visa and entry requirements for their destinations before booking. Visa exemptions within the East African Community depend on the destination, the traveller's nationality, and applicable entry rules.
Planning ahead remains important
Although digital booking can simplify the process, advance planning remains important, particularly during peak travel periods such as Christmas and New Year, when demand for seats may increase and fares may change.
Travellers should also verify that the passenger information is accurate and retain their booking confirmation and electronic ticket for reference.
The ability to book tickets for other people may also make the service useful for families and individuals arranging travel for relatives, provided the correct passenger details are supplied.
With Travel by MoMo, MTN MoMo is extending the use of mobile money beyond routine payments such as airtime, school fees, and household expenses into travel planning.
Customers can access the feature through the MoMo app by selecting Lifestyle, then Travel, to explore available flight options and complete their bookings.
Note: The availability of routes, airlines, payment conditions, and booking features should be confirmed with MTN MoMo before publication.
