The Southeast Division just got a whole lot meaner. Every single team in the group made a move to get better, and the Atlanta Hawks are right in the thick of it. This isn’t the same weak division that everyone ignored last year. The Wizards, Heat, Magic, and Hornets all added pieces that change the game.
Last season, no club in this division made it past the first round of the playoffs. The Wizards finished with a terrible 17-65 record, while the Hawks and Magic both fell in the first round. Now, the landscape has shifted. Per Chattanooga Times Free Press, the Wizards are set to pair Anthony Davis with Trae Young for the first time. That pairing alone changes how defenses have to think.
Big Moves Across the Board
Atlanta didn’t sit on the sidelines. Lu Dort, a big-time stopper, was added by the Hawks to a defensive lineup that was already strong. That is a massive upgrade for a team that needs to grind out wins. The Magic made a smart hire by bringing in Sean Sweeney, a former San Antonio Spurs staff member, as their new head coach. They are trying to build a culture of discipline.
Miami went even further. They landed Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson. The Heat went 53-29 in 2021-22, and they are trying to get back to that level of success. Grayson Allen, a former Duke guard, returned to North Carolina with the Hornets to boost scoring. Even the Wizards, who were the worst team in the league, are now a threat with their new star duo.
A Brutal Start for Atlanta
The Hawks will know quickly if they are ready for this new reality. Quin Snyder and his revamped roster will face an immediate challenge during Atlanta’s first seven games of the 2026-27 campaign. The schedule is nasty from the jump. Against the Orlando Magic, the team opens the regular season on October 21.
From there, the grind gets harder. Within three days, the Hawks will play two meetings against the Houston Rockets. Among the stronger teams in the Western Conference, Houston has established itself. Giannis Antetokounmpo features on a new-look Miami Heat team that then presents a challenge. The Hawks will also face a matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers. According to Soaring Down South, Quin Snyder can utilize these opening games to spot what works and what requires improvement.
Win Totals Tell the Story
The numbers suggest this is a tight race. For a division containing only one 50-win team in the past 11 seasons, that represents a very narrow margin. Miami set that standard with 53 wins a few years back, but the gap has closed.
History shows this division struggles to produce elite teams. The only 50-win squad in the last decade-plus was Miami in 2021-22. Now, with Giannis in town and Trae Young getting a new partner, the ceiling is much higher.
