The incident was reported at the Woolworths supermarket in Kambah about 7.15pm on Wednesday, October 21,
ACT Policing confirmed it received multiple reports of a group of four young people wearing masks entering a store attempting to steal goods.
Police said a bystander in the store intervened during the attempted theft and was allegedly struck across the face with a bottle and was left with cuts.
The four people reportedly fled the scene before police arrived.
A woman, who witnessed the aftermath of the incident after walking into the Woolworths with her seven-year-old son, said she was left "absolutely speechless" seeing the man's injuries.
Sharing her shocking encounter in an online post, the mother alleged the man was "bottled" by teenagers stealing alcohol.
"He was covered in blood," the mother told The Canberra Times, adding the man was a customer who tried to help.
She said she saw blood and a broken glass bottle on the floor of the Woolworths about 7.15pm.

"I was told that it was a group of teenagers and they come in quite regularly and steal," she said, referring to witnesses at the scene.
The woman said she bought a few items before leaving the supermarket and was disappointed that there were no police officers or paramedics at the scene.
An ACT Emergency Services Agency spokeswoman said police first called for an ambulance about 7.20pm and called back about 20 minutes later stating the victim did not want ambulance assistance.
