In fulfilment of one of its objectives to meet the health needs of its members, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) passed a resolution to authorise the deduction of Two Ghana Cedis (GHC2.00) from each member per month to fund the treatment of any member who suffers from cancer.
The treatment covers all cancers, apart from blood- related cancers and covers a member, his or her spouse, and two children below eighteen years of age.
Since its inception in 2014, the fund in collaboration with the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre (SGMC), a state-of- the-art oncology centre for the treatment of cancer has taken care of the treatment of over Ten Thousand GNAT members.
Led by the General Manager for Business Development & Distribution (BDD) at Unique Insurance Company Ltd, Gifty Owusuwaa Darko, a delegation from the company presented a donation of Two Thousand Cedia (GHS 20, 000) to the GNAT Cancer Foundation.
"On behalf of the staff of Unique Insurance, this is our window's contribution towards the work the foundation is doing in helping solve the cancer situation for teachers" Madam Gloria said as she presented the cheque.
The Board Chairman of the GNAT Cancer Foundation, Thomas Armstrong Asante expressed his gratitude to the staff of Unique Insurance Company Ltd and assured that the money would be used for the benefit of the teachers whilst entreating other well-meaning individuals and groups to support the foundation since the treatment of cancer is too expensive for an individual to bear alone.
"Cancer is real, and it's treatable, but the cost of treatment is very expensive and GNAT alone cannot do it to get our people well screened and treated. The support we give is not enough but we are doing our best and we call on other organisations to emulate the gesture you have shown so that all our teachers or their dependants who are in this dangerous situation can get treated. If you help a teacher, you have helped a nation," he admonished.
It is estimated that the cost of treating one cancer patient ranges from Forty-Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC45,000.00) to Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC250,000.00)
